I'm currently watching Funi's A Sister's All You Need. Is it just me or is the video really grainy/noisy (and a bit soft)? I like the show so far (half-way through) but the video quality really irks me.

It was just re-released on Blu-ray in Japan in December (in a set it already was out as singles) if you want to upgrade, doubt it ever gets re-released here. Don't own it but watched it on CR and wouldn't mind owning it if the quality was better, it's a cute ecchi show.

Well, I'll ponder that option, but I don't think I like the show that much.

I'm more upset at the terrible subtitling job they did. (Some lines are just not subbed. Great job! QC? What's that?)

Haven't noticed that yet. What I did notice is that the (Japanese) lip-sync is considerably off in places, to the point of being really distracting. However it varies within chapters, so I guess it must be a source issue.

As in, the audio doesn’t sync up to the mouth movements? If so, that’s common- very few anime use プレスコ (pre-recording), so most voice acting is the Seiyuu dubbing over animation- be it finished or not. Now, while I know we’re not dub people, but if the dub- which is done to match the flaps perfectly- doesn’t sync up right, it’s a real error.

If you want more info on the topic, watch this video:

I know, and it's something I'm sensitive to (and sometimes my Oppo gets slightly out-of-sync if I do too much rwd/ffd), but on this title it's exceptionally bad in certain scenes.

I see. Well, then I guess it isn’t a sync error on the BD, but that of the source. It’s a shame, really that such practices are used, but as it saves time, in an already overworked and down-to-the-wire industry, such techniques are sadly needed to stay afloat. Oh well...

Funimation discs are either made wrong, or somethings wrong with our Oppos. (I'm betting on the former.)

On just about all my Funi releases, I have to manually either speed up or slow down the A/V sync by +/- 10mls.

But I've never had it change from rwd/ffd, it has always been wrong from the start.

What I find most interesting is that it is not consistent, it's either too fast or too slow. I don't know if it maybe has something to do with encoding/authoring.

I'm just happy our players allow us to easily fix this.

While I don’t Ike FUNi as much as you, I highly doubt that’s the case. Do you know what you’re talking about? Is is actual sync issues, or is it the “not matching the lip flaps” sort of sync issues?

On all of my Blus, I've never had sync issues unless it was inherit to the original source.

This happens only on Funi discs, so it makes me think it's their discs/source/whatever and not the player.

You're right that it only happens with Funi discs. I wouldn't be surprised if it's an Oppo bug that is only triggered with the way Funi encodes their discs. Anyway I can usually reset it by going to the menu and/or stopping playback and selecting an episode from the menu. It's still a pain of course. Which Oppo do you have, the 103?

Another problem I have with the Oppo is that if I rewind a bit (just a couple of seconds or so), the subs don't immediately reappear. Often I have to rewind much further (10-20 seconds) to have subs again at the location I originally wanted to rewind to. This is really annoying, and it seems to depend on how the subs are encoded. It generally doesn't happen with non-anime discs.

A related problem is that on some discs, when I skip a chapter, the first sub at the beginning of the chapter I skipped to doesn't show, if that sub is immediately at the start of the chapter (often that's the title card sub after the OP) unless I first rewind a bit to before the chapter mark.

It’s your player then. I’ve tried FUNi discs on many players: my Seiki, PS4, XB1, and friends’ XB1, Sony players and a few others. Never had those issues. It’s an Oppo thing, I guess.

^ What I wrote in my latest post is different from the issue I have with A Sister's All You Need.

^ I see. Well, I’ll just assume that “A Sister’s All You Need” had badly timed voice acting in the first place, but the FUNi issues I addressed are to show that I’ve never encountered any not in the source. It could be anything, really.

If you look at my original post, that's exactly what I wrote, that it must be a source issue. I think you're trying to hard to add information on something you don't have any more information on either.

I’m not trying to add any information on this, I simply mininterpreted what your question was. That’s all. My mistake.

I have a BDP-103 and noticed nothing wrong with ASAYN. Except for the soft video, but I figured that was source-related.

I have never noticed audio-sync issues with FUNi discs on either of the Oppo Blu-ray players I've had.

I use an Oppo 103 and I've never noticed any audio sync issues with Funi's discs. That's just my experience though.

The subtitle issues you described I have encountered quite a bit though, particularly with Sentai releases. I typically skip the EDs so it's annoying when the subtitles won't load for the next episode previews. I always thought that was a timing issue but maybe it is a problem Oppo just never fixed. I think the 103 is legacy now and won't have anymore firmware updates.
