Upon reading the thread title immediately I thought, 'oh no, another 4k . . .', but I'm genuinely excited about it after reading the description.

I also like the French plantation segue. It is a quiet but pivotal moment in the movie and adds different perspective & absurdity; an rubber plantation run by foreigners claiming that it is their right to do so . . . !?! What if powerful countries do the same with oil, weapons, animals? Humans?

I've got BD so I'll get the 4K when the price drops under C$20.

I hope it includes all three cuts, but I’m very excited to see this new one. I’m buying it regardless, of course.

It does the opposite, since it's about Willard journeying backward in time from modern warfare to a tribal setting by the time he gets to Kurtz. That's why it was conceived that way, so it 100% fits if you actually care about the theme of the film.

The "Final Cut" showing at Tribeca is 147 minutes, which is six minutes shorter than the theatrical cut.

Theatrical cut or nothin', for me. "Never get off the boat."

Plus all this talk what scene should be left in or out... If we have three cuts of his film, I need them all. Theatrical is a priority, of course, but it won't feel "right" if other two will be left out.

Yeah, which is why I opined before that it's not like the negative had dissolved into vinegar already, they were just too cheap to restore it last time out.

Any speculation what they cut from the film? Or replaced.

Funny thing is, when Coppola put together Redux in 2001 it was reported that the 'new' footage was cut directly into the negative from which new elements were struck, so it couldn't have been in that bad condition to begin with!

They were initially going to re-edit Redux on interpositive, but because they'd decided to create new IB Tech prints - at Storaro's urging - of this restored, recut film then the dye matrices for those prints would have to be created directly from the camera negative, as per normal IB tech procedure.

So however this new new cut has been arrived at, they would've had to unpick it from the recut camera negative that had been conformed as the Redux version, as well as accessing the original camera negative for any as-yet-unseen scenes/shots that Coppola wants to include in the Final Cut (all that material having been safely stored in a Pennsylvania mountain vault).

That depends on whether you count the end credits. The current Blu doesn't have any (which, from what I understand, reflects the original 70mm prints), and it runs right at 147 minutes.

If the run time is identical, why is it called Final Cut? Some clean-up work? Color grading change?

I'm so up for this. I hope for the theatrical version, but I'll take whatever they give us. Mainly because Coppola is the only one I'd trust with this film.

I can't disagree more. It's about pacing and the fact everything already points to a de-evolution as they travel down the river. It also shifts the setting and vibe too much and adds unnecessary characters. It was cut for good reasons. Never get off the boat... indeed.
