It’s very weird watching it go from Danny’s visions to them just heading to the hotel. I hate it.

Imo it’s not a tighter paced film.... it’s a butchered film. That’s just my opinion though.
I find the Euro cut isn't tighter paced so much as rushed; it seems to speed along far too fast for my liking. Long cut all the way.

There are things that I like about the EU version (like I said before I feel that there are improvements in pacing) but I also think the US version is the better cut of the film.

Yes some of the scenes with Dick driving up to the Overlook and him getting the snowcat from his friend were probably unnecessary but they’re not very long and it doesn’t throw off the pace imo. Doesn’t it trim off some of the bar scene also? That’s just criminal. CRIMINAL I TELL YA!!!

Completely agree 100% I feel the majority of people who like the EU cut are people whose first viewing of the film was that cut.

Awesome! I was just about to order the movie on blu-ray today but I thought I'd hold it out for a possible 4K release. What a coincidence!

All I know is that in the Euro version

Call me crazy but I’ve always liked that scene. I always saw it as Wendy is “a confirmed ghost story and horror film fanatic” and that’s kinda like the cheesy horror stuff she probably watches and reads come to life.

Anyway that’s always been my take on it. I can see it being cheesy to a lot of people though because there’s so many unsettling images leading to that point and then you see that.... it kinda takes you back for a second and you just go “seriously”? Lol

40th anniversary is 2020, so maybe an anniversary set?

Disney released a 40th anniversary blu for Mary Poppins a year too early. There's precedent for such tomfoolery and shenanigans.

I'd say the reverse is true.

Hopefully, we get both cuts, but if this is split again so that the US gets the longer cut and we get the shorter, I'll be ordering a US copy.

EDIT: And the Euro one too, no doubt.

I was lucky enough to see it in 35mm when they finally re-released it in the UK not long after SK carked it, this was in 2000 IIRC. I don't think I can make it to any of these latest screenings but they'll be real horrorshow I'm sure.

I was thinking the same thing, they probably had to dig up some of the OG neg to do those scenes (and do them so well!) in RPO so maybe they figured they might as well remaster the whole thing while they were at it

I'm an American who only knew our longer cut for most of my life and always felt it dragged a bit. Learned about the Euro version accidentally when I bought the UK Kubrick BD set cheap and fell in love with it immediately.

But of course I still absolutely want both cuts on UHD. Both because I'm a completist but also because the American cut of The Shining is my GF's favorite film. We go back and forth between cuts to keep one another happy.

Absolutely. You get to the Overlook faster, there are fewer cutaways from the Overlook once you're there and I believe most if not all scenes with a TV on in the background are cut.

Here’s a good breakdown between the two cuts for those interested: https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=1215

Quite frankly, I couldn’t imagine watching The Shining with those scenes cut out. Wouldn’t feel the same.
