It wasn't to the soundtrack community. After the Jaws movies and then 4 being released, it made complete sense and was expected.

All the praise you've been hearing about the LaLa Land set...
![]() Got mine Friday and just got around to listening and comparing a few tracks to the same material in the big blue box. You can easily hear now how the original mixers contorted and chained the sound of the recording - and it's what we've been hearing ever since, going back to the original LP and film mix(es). The new release is, no hyperbole, revelatory. |

One of the music labels (I forget which one) recently said that John Williams does not want Sugarland Express released.

No specific reason has been given, but it's generally believed that he doesn't want the score released because it's not really a coherent score, so much as bits of short music strung together for a film. He feels the same way about the source cue music he did for Superman and doesn't want it as part of his official film score, despite his creation of it.

For me the worst thing about the theatrical cut (and the 3 hour TV extended one) is precisely the lack of the isolated score, only available in the "Director’s Cut".
It’s also odd that apparently the isolated score is out of sync in my 2000 DC DVD and corrected in the DC Blu-ray (in the DVD the isolated track is not synchronized with the scenes - maybe it’s just my copy?). I listened to a fan edited isolated score for Superman IV (of course created from the Blue Box album) and it was a great experience - it would have been a wonderful extra if available. It’s really a shame these companies don’t bother doing it. Since it was created for the Director’s Cut I don’t understand how hard could it be to edit for the theatrical cut. Isolated scores cost the studios money when included - dealing with music rights are often a completely different bag of kettle than film rights.

![]() Is there any advantage to the releases people have been discussing the last few pages? |
