Has anyone tried leaving the usb drive plugged in, I heard that it might help with playing some of the movies.

I find there are more interactive features with this player. The high Definition quality is really amazing.

I installed the 2/04/09 firmware update today and just put on Narnia: Prince Caspian and it is playing okay. Haven't checked any other titles as this was the one giving me a problem. Still loads this movie slow, but it also loads rather slow on my Panasonic DMP-BD35.

I'm hoping this firmware update resolves most if not all of the playback issues that we have all noticed and reported, and not just the 2 movies they noted on the website.

If anyone has any issues to share regarding playback problems on certain movies after the update, please spread the word.

I did an update as well, and it might just be me but I swore it loaded faster than before... Don't know if it was the update or might have something to do with leaving the 1GB flashdrive in the USB port...

Default Still having problems

New to forum & Bluray. We won a Sharp BD-HP21 and we're having problems with at least half the movies we've watched. If we'd bought this p.o.s. we'd have returned it already. I have owned a Sharp DVD player that never worked right, a rarely used Sharp Fax machine that died after only 2-3 years, and a $600 Sharp Camcorder that worked for a year and a half flawlessly, and then just crapped out and would never work again.

Did the firmware update last week. Watched Pursuit of Happyness and at one point in the movie it started pixillating and jerking and we had to remove the disc and clean it with eyeglass cleaner. It worked after that.

This week we started watching Hellboy II; watched some of the special features fine, watched the first 17 minutes of the film fine, then pixillating and jerky motion and sound. Cleaning didn't help. This continued for almost an hour of the film (I didn't watch the entire hour, but I put the subtitles on and f-fwd-ed it, stopping occasionally to test.

Then towards the middle of the film it started working OK, and this lasted for about 1/2 hour more, then at the last fight sequence it started messing up again, and at one point it just froze. I had to UNPLUG the @#$ing thing to get it to reboot and open the disc tray. The disc had a few tiny scratches and dinks, but nothing that wouldn't play on a DVD.

We own a copy of The Hulk with Edward Norton and it plays fine. We watched Get Smart and a few other films no problem, but Prince Caspian wouldn't play before the update, and several other films such as Kung FU Panda had similar problems to Hellboy II.

For now I'm switching back to DVD on Netflix because I don't want to waste my time anymore. Screw Blu-ray, it's not ready for prime time.

Okay so if you have had bad experiences with Sharp before, maybe you should consider another brand.
And as far as saying that Blu-ray is not ready for prime time, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but it's here and not going anywhere. I wish you would try another player, perhaps the PS3 before you give up on Blu-ray all together.

Default Thanks for the reply, pacificvibes

OK, I was venting. I have spent hours between all the problems I've had with this unit, and not been able to watch two or three movies that we really looked fwd to seeing.

As for your suggestions to try another brand, it's not in my budget. I did mention that we won the HP21U; I wouldn't have even bought a Blu-ray player for a long time until I was sure the technology was solid (and until the prices stopped coming down). The very existence of this thread proves my point.

I already own an Xbox (also won in a sweepstakes), so I don't need another gaming console. As I pointed out I have had several less-than-gratifying experiences with Sharp products.

Nevertheless, they did personally respond to my trouble report of last night, and said I should try resetting the player by turning the power off, then pressing and holding the power button for several seconds. And if that doen't work, "Please call 1-800-237-4277" for assistance.

I will report my results here later, I have to go to work now.

Im not quite sure I understand, this technology is extremely solid. And what does the price of movies going down have anything to do with the technology of Blu-ray??? Furthermore, I really dont think this thread proves your point.

You misquoted me. I did not mention the price of movies (which are in fact absurdly priced). Go back and read my post again. I said:

As far as the technology being solid, one of the hottest videos on The Onion right now is the parody of a news report announcing "Sony introduces new Stupid Piece of s#!t that doesn't f&^%ing work!"

It wouldn't be funny if there weren't some truth to it.

I tried resetting the player as per Sharp's instructions. No difference, over half of Hellboy II still unwatchable.

I watched the blu-ray of Hell-boy 2 without any issues on my unit, however that was with the firmware from November '08. Not sure if perhaps the newest release of firmware caused something to mess up the movie.

Don't get me wrong though, I still am very disappointed with sharp and the crap that they make and the customer service that they offer, but as of yet I haven't had any issues with the newest release of firmware (04/02/09).
