Default Good Stores for Vinyl Equipment in New York-Tri State Area

I am looking for a good vinyl equipment store in New York (Long Island, NYC). I can not seem to find one. I know there are great online sites, but I want to be able to see and demo the equipment. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I am looking to upgrade my table and cartridge. My current setup is the following;

Table- Pro-Ject Xpression III
Cartridge- Blue Point No.2
Pre Amp- Pro-Ject Phono Box SE II
Pro-Ject Speed Box II

Hi,

I'm from Canada, so I don't know what states are included in the "Tri-State area", but there are any number of guys on here that will help you out, I'm sure.

Are you looking to upgrade your current setup?

Cool! What's your budget like and are you going to sell your X-pression or keep it?

The X-pression is actually quite a nice TT, however I am not a fan of the Bluepoint cartridge. I personally find it lacks in the mid-to-bottom end. I'm kind of partial to GRADO cartridges as they (IMO) have a more rounded sound. Of course, that is a personal choice and we all have different likes for the sound we want.

My budget for table and cartridge is probably around $2,500. I am going to sell my X-Pression and cartridge.

For that budget you could certainly look into one of the VPI models. You could also move higher up with the Pro-ject line or a Rega. The Sota is another respected manufacturer, but I have never heard them. And Clearaudio has some really good TT's in your price range.

Your choices aren't infinate, but your budget will allow for a TT that will give you many years of satisfaction.

John

PS: Great to see another Vinyl lover here. There are quite a few of us actually!

I just got into vinyl back in November of 2008 and I am hooked. The sound quality is so amazing, nothing can match in my opinion. There is just something different and special about spinning the black circle.

I was excited to the see this section on Vinyl and old school music.

John,

The Tri State area that Joe is talking about is New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

I bought my first LP in 1966...it was "Beatles '65"...and I've been hooked ever since. I can't remember how many times I've upgraded, replaced cartridges, invested in cleaning devices, protective sleeves and the like. I'm currently waiting for my new Marantz TT-15S1 turntable to arrive. I had to special-order it as my dealer doesn't normally carry the line. I can't wait!!!!

John

PS: I have about 800-900 LP's here with me and another 2,000 in storage.

Hey Rich,

I knew you'd come by sooner than later. I almost suggested that Joe contact you, as I thought it could include PA. Anyway my good friend.....can you help him out? Do you know of any good resellers about?

John,

I am not really sure who to suggest. I haven't lived in New Jersey for a number of years now. But, the store that I used to work with in Upper Montclair is CSA Audio. They like many stores have changed the lines that they carry dramatically and I am not sure if they even carry Turntables anymore.

I am not sure of who to suggest or even who are High End Dealers in Queens and on the rest of Long Island. Several of the Best Known Stores in Manhattan are Sound By Singer and Lyric HiFi. But, I am not sure if they would have anything in Joe's price range. I think that Harvey's Electronics may have shut down all of their stores in New York and New Jersey, since as I recall they had gone bankrupt.

Joe will have to check around, because at this point, I am not sure who else to recommend.

Rich

Thanks Rich!

Looks like you'll have to wait a bit Joe, before others chime in. In the meantime, if you have any other questions we'd be glad to asnwer them for you.

In my very limited research as of yet, It seems to be narrowing down to Pro-Ject RM9 or RM10 vs VPI entry level tables such as the scout or the classic. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

Check out the current issue of TAS (The Absolute Sound) magazine. They have a feature about entry-level turntables that might interest you.
