Okay. Sorry to characterize it that way. I guess I was just a little frustrated that the 'news' didn't relate to any release we weren't already aware is coming.

Love the announcement this morning. I have never owned any of the Trek movies nor the series but I figure this is a great time to pick them up and enjoy. Not Day 1 purchases for me but they are on the buy list.

A quick question about the slip cover Bill refered to. Are we going to get a case similar to the godfather/Lost case with a slip cover or a case similar to the Heroes season?

Thanks guys over at thebits for all the info regarding these.

None of us have seen the product up close yet, but I'd expect TOS to be close to lost 4 for packaging, and the movies to be like Marix trilogy

Lack of popularity, unfortunately. I personally believe it's the best overall of all the series. TOS and TNG are amazing shows, but the arcing story, the characters, and the scope make it most deserving, IMO of a facelift.

TNG will get it before anything, Voyager would probably be next, but much much much more unlikely and a miracle probably involving ritual sacrifice would be required for DS9 (not that I endorse such things even to get HD DS9). Seriously, TNG remastered is looking bad, especially with the announcment of it re-entering syndication with no HD announcement to go with it. In order to have it ready to go in syndication they would have had to start this early last year, and that simply wasn't the case. The only way I can see this happening now is if they find some kind of broadcast partner(s) to co-finance the project. Cable exclusivity on Trek got burned out 10 years ago, so it's not going to mean much now. Too bad, this would have been the time to cut those kinds of deals

Thanks for that Jeff, although not quite the news i wanted to hear Sky/virgin in the uk seem to take turns on showing trek and they have hd channels - would they show tng in sd or just run the existing master through an upconverter??.
Back to the movies though - is their any chance of paramount eventually releasing the extended cuts with the same packaging as the current set - that way collectors/fans can get the extended cut and keep the appearance of the set?

I'm positive that you'll see the "good versions" of 1,2,6 down the road. The first one simply could not be released in HD because all of the DC FX work was only in SD.

I doubt the packaging will match, count on swapping discs out. Personally I find the art they chose very tasteful and subdued, I hope the upcoming TNG set is equally as attractive

Didn't you just say that TNG is looking more and more unlikely?

Tahnks Jeff - much appreciated, and I do like the cover art, very subtle indeed

The TNG TV seasons are looking more and more unlikely. The TNG movies will be out this fall, and that is the set Jeff hopes is equally attractive.

Jeff: Any idea if the ST6 BD will finally restore the theatrical AR of 2.35:1? Or will it have the same 2.00:1 ratio as the previous LD/DVDs?

I'm assuming you're referring to extended director cuts.

If so, I'm pretty disappointed and *may* hold off here. As much as I'd like to own these movies (yet again), I find it hard to justify paying for them 2 more times.

One has to wonder why he chose it after the theatrical run.

It sticks out like a sore thumb being the ONLY Trek film not 2.35 on video.

Seeing it theatrically many times in 2.35 the framing and compostion are perfect.

I'm thinking that Meyer, like some other directors or cinematographers (who will go nameless >cough< Last Emperor >cough<) thought that 4x3 SD home video didn't have enough resolution and the blown/opened up ratio offered more. Now that BD is by default a high resolution 16x9 format perhaps they'll reconsider in the future.

Isn't the Top Gun BD proper framing for the first time?

While Vittorio Storraro will likely never change his mind, there's certainly the possibility with Nick Meyer

I just wish they'd called him up to do the reboot instead of JJ. There's one man who's consistently pulled Trek's butt out of the fire and that's Nick Meyer

Its nice to know someone else thinks DS9 was actually the best.

It flat out had the best writers and story. The only mistake the show made was pairing Worf and Dax. That was the stupidest decision made on DS9.

I still say First Contact is the best of all Trek films.

However, the 6th would be my 2nd fav and I have to agree about Nick Meyer. His name was attached to all the best even numbered original films.

I have to be honest, I pretty much like ALL the films, except the first.
