How do we know a label has actually licensed it? The Insider stayed that they know who holds the rights and it’s a matter of which label is willing to pay the asking price, which doesn’t confirm that a label has actually paid the asking price.

LOST HIGHWAY (1997) Color 134 Minutes 2.35:1 Rated R
Haunting sexuality, ricochet action and fleeting, murderous shadows await you on a journey that begins and ends on the Lost Highway. The successful jazz musician whose marriage is on the rocks... The man in black who threatens to expose him... The young mechanic with links to a powerful mobster... The mobster’s moll, who knows what she wants and the people who can get it for her. These are the riders on the Lost Highway, trapped in their worlds of desire, destiny, and unknown destination, where the truth is always just a short way further down the road. Featuring an electrifying soundtrack and a star-studded cast including Bill Pullman (Malice), Patricia Arquette (True Romance), Robert Blake (Busting), Balthazar Getty (White Squall), Gary Busey (Silver Bullet), Richard Pryor (Blue Collar) and Robert Loggia (Prizzi’s Honor), Lost Highway is an extraordinary, sensual fever dream from legendary filmmaker David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks).

Will this feature a (much-needed) new scan?

I was pretty much going to just say this. Doesn't sound like anyone has bought the rights yet.

You know Lost Highway is gonna be a big seller. I hope it does get a new scan and some solid extras.

Think there's any chance of LH getting Lynch's later short films released on his website or anything like that?

I'm still intrigued that as to why the Insider said 'some questions remain unanswered for a reason' (or something to that effect), when I asked about Cemetery Man being with Universal, however long ago it was now. What was the reason, may we speculate? I took it to be a hint that the title was with Universal and that Kino had it, but evidently I was wrong. Yet I wonder why he chose to respond in that way. I can only think of a few reasons:

1) At the time, perhaps Kino thought the title may have been with Universal, and were awaiting clarification on the matter (seems unlikely given that the Universal deal had already been agreed, but who knows?). Because if the Insider knew it wasn't with Universal, why not just state as such?

2) A strange one, but maybe Kino had discovered who the rights holder was and didn't want to alert possible rivals to the situation? That being said, he was never going to reply with the specific identity of the rights holder, so this seems unlikely.

3) At the time, they were negotiating with the relevant party and were confident of landing a deal, but perhaps the goalposts were moved and talks broke down?

4) The best possibility - The Insider states that 'it's all about who's willing to pay the right holder's asking price.' Even now he has not denied Kino having the title, so maybe they have paid the asking price?

I do think it is possible that Criterion got the rights to Cemetery Man. I always wanted them to release that movie.

Given that KLInsider has pointedly not answered the multiple questions about whether Lost Highway will get a new scan... I'm thinking maybe they're trying to figure that out. IIRC, they've usually responded that they will be using existing masters when that's the case... So to not say that now gives me some sliver of hope.

EDIT: On the other hand, this has a definite release date already: June 25th. That's probably too fast a turnaround for them to still be figuring out whether they're doing a new scan...

Yeah, it was a strange response, but it really sounds like they don't have. Wish it weren't the case as I really want the film on Blu-ray.

We wanted the fans and our competitors to think it was still with Universal or Studio Canal. Hoping we can agree to a deal with the actual rights holder. The same goes for Brotherhood of the Wolf, which most people thought was with Universal or Studio Canal and neither of them have the rights to it. Now that's some real insider information.

I have a question for Kino.

You guys have been doing a great job on the MGM/DePatie Freleng cartoons. The Pink Panther and cohorts. Have you/would you consider tackling other classic animation in the future?

In that case then, it seems reasonable to surmise that most of the Hammer titles went to Scream. I think this list covers most of the 70s horror-ish SC titles left:

Homebodies
Zoltan: Hound of Dracula
Murder by Decree
Antichrist (not sure if this is still with SC)
The Horror of Frankenstein
Scars of Dracula
Blood from the Mummy's Tomb
Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde
To the Devil... A Daughter
Demons of the Mind
Straight on Till Morning
Fear in the Night

Of that list, I think most would say that the following are more 'horror-themed':

Homebodies (given the comedy element)
Murder By Decree (given the mystery thriller element)
Demons of the Mind (psychological/mystery elements)
Straight on Till Morning (more a thriller)
Fear in the Night (more a thriller)

So Kino could easily have a number of these. And that should mean the 'pure horror' is one of these:

Zoltan: Hound of Dracula
Antichrist (if with SC)
The Horror of Frankenstein
Scars of Dracula
Blood from the Mummy's Tomb
Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde
To the Devil... A Daughter

I reckon Scream will grab the Hammers, so might end up being one of Zoltan or Antichrist. I did ask about Antichrist along with two other titles (Callan and Cat and Mouse), and the Insider confirmed they had one of the three, but that it wouldn't be released until late 2020 for some reason.

Really appreciate this insider info, fantastic to have you on here in such a helpful and enlightening capacity. I guess I was kind of right with number 2 then! Are Brotherhood of the Wolf and Cemetery Man with the same rights holder then?

We had asked for that a while back, the studio was not interested in licensing it. They may be willing to license it to you know who, but it'll most likely get a release from the studio, maybe next year (40th Anniversary). I'm just guessing.

LOST HIGHWAY

We acquired the rights last year. We did reach out to the filmmaker. And that's all we can say about it.

The transfer is a very good one, we watched it and it looks great. We're trying to clear three extras and hope to list the additional details next week.
