Default Blu Ray and Apple

I did a quick search and didn't see anything about this. My question is about Blu ray compatibility with Apple products. I'm considering getting an iMac but if they're gonna start putting Blu Ray drives in them I'll hold off a while longer. Has anyone heard any plans of something to this extent? If not are there any external Blu Ray drives or something like that? Sorry if this has been mentioned somewhere before.

Apple has no plans at the moment for either BD drives or BD movie playback.

If you're in the market for an iMac, supposedly there will be a quad-core model in the coming months.

Don't buy yet as they are going to be refreshed in a couple of months.

If Apple add BD, it will be for the Pro's first not comsumer (so Mac Pro and MacBook Pro will get it first).

So an Apple can't support a BD drive at all, not even an external drive? I'm considering purchasing the new 17" MacBook Pro, which supports 1080p.

The computer can support a BD drive just fine (in fact the new 17" can take a standard 12.5mm SATA slot-loading drive internally). There's just not currently an OS X playback solution available, so you have to use bootcamp and boot into Windows to playback Blu-ray movies. BD burning and data reading is supported within OS X.

As for Apple's "plans," anyone stating emphatically what Apple does or doesn't have planned is just guessing completely. Apple doesn't support Blu-ray currently, and won't up until the day they do. That day could come in 2 weeks, or not for another 2 years. What can be said is that discussions have taken place, work has been done, and at one point at least, they were fairly close on the hardware on software front. Licensing is another issue, though the new changes to Blu-ray licensing may be exactly what Apple was waiting on.

I think we may know the same people at Disney. We had a night-long drunken argument over exactly that when I was back out in LA a couple months ago.

Keep in mind that Apple would like nothing more than to see Blu-ray fizzle out as a passing fad, as it competes with its iTunes product. That said, there are too many out there who want it (including me), so I couldn't see them not supporting it for too much longer.

Nice screen name by the way. That was the name of my best friends' band when we were youngsters.

I just went ahead and asked for it (macbook pro) for x-mas because I saw no indicator they would add it in a 1-2 years time.

I like it alot, and I also still love my pc (even tho everyone I know who had a mac said they were pc killers)

Ask your parents if I can have a MacBook Pro for X-Mas also!

Apple might not have Bluray for some time as Steve Jobs thought Digital Downloads will replace it.

Can his decision be reversed due to an 'unfit state of mind'? It is obvious he is the only one who thinks this way and considering his health...he is not in the best place to make this choice IMO.

I hope iTunes fail! I would hate to see Blu-ray disappear from the market. I don't like being forced to rent their so called HD 720p at $5 while I can rent BD 1080p from Netflix at 85 cents. You pay more for less!
