He’s right in terms of Japanese pronunciation for Evangelion, but that’s now how an English speaker would say it- I think it would be “A-vahn-gel-e-ohn” (trying to write it out is so hard).

Asuka is obvious “Ah-sska”.

After so many years of watching a lot of subbed anime and reading tons of manga, you would think that I would have gotten the hang of not pronouncing the “u” in Japanese names, but nope. Weirder still, I do it selectively with certain names and don’t for others. I don’t even know what dictates which ones, it just happens?? Like with Asuka, I pronounce it as Ah-soo-ka, and even though I know it’s wrong, it doesnt feel right without the u. But with a name like Emu, I instinctively pronounce it as Em. Why am I like this???

It’s even more ironic that I am this way because in my native language, Russian, we also have last names that end with a u that we don’t pronounce. (Ex. Moldova’s Eurovision representative singer this year is Anna Odobescu, last name is pronounced without the u.) English has me fked uuupp.

There's a little bit he gets "wrong". Like he says the evan part like you would pronounce the name and less like evahn. I've also heard people pronounce that part like you would the word even. But the dude speaks english, there are several ways to pronounce evangelion that would wouldn't be strange, especially depending on your accent.

The reason why his mispronunciation of Asuka is so strange is because I've never heard someone mess those types of words up like that. Usually you hear someone go ah-soo-kuh, whereas he just went, ah-sa-kuh.

It's kind of funny though how we always judge english speakers for their pronunciations of japanese words. Meanwhile watch any anime where they say english words and they're always mispronounced. For that matter, evangelion isn't a japanese word. I'm totally guilty of this too, just thought it was interesting.

The Japanese rarely hear English, nowhere near to the extent an American anime-fan hears Japanese, at least, and are just notoriously poor with English. No one has ever pronounced Asuka like he does, in an English dub or in the Japanese original, so there’s no excuse for that guy.

Aside from the cheesy acting and adults who never sound anything like kids in anime, the way they pronounce Japanese names is the most cringeworthy part of English dubs.

I once watched a Funi dub of a Lupin TV special and I died every time that Jigen (Jig-n, instead of gee-gen), Goemon (Go-mahn rather than Go-E-Mon) and even one instance of Arsene were mispronounced.

Not really a fair comparison. Japanese folk have issues with English because, phonetically, Japanese is a very simple language. The vast majority of the sounds we use in English straight up don't exist in Japanese, and are completely foreign to them. The inverse is only true for a small handful of sounds.

Still there is a nuance to how the Japanese pronounce their words, if I didn't watch anime I would have no idea how to do it. Also the Japanese ALL do take English in school and are quite aware they are pronouncing everything wrong. This is why many Japanese will pretend they don't understand English when spoken to because they don't want to be embarrassed for not speaking it completely right (though it's probably better than most American's Japanese).
