Scream Factory release Dead Ringers a while ago. Existenz needs a new transfer and I will buy a 20th-anniversary Blu-Ray for sure.

You DARE ask a question like this in the middle of all the fan boy conversations? Okay, I admit when I was younger I too was a fan boy. Mostly on Kubrick and Kurosawa. I'm too old to obsess like I used too, because I love way too many directors now.

I'm not sure who owns the rights too Shoeshine. It used to be with Janus Films but I tried searching for an answer online but couldn't find one. I hope someone can help out us old school CC fans by finding this, and other De Sica titles, owners and availability.

And while we're at it, more Truffaut please. Two English Girls had a Criterion LD release so keeping the fingers crossed.

After years of reading about, but never seeing a film by, Wim Wenders I watched Paris, Texas and The American Friend in the dying days of Filmstruck... My love of road films and films where nothing really happens collided. The Road trilogy was ordered in the next half off sale.

Of course I just got around to it, Alice in the Cities was also fantastic! The unhurried pace and dryness seems to share space with two of my favorite directors; Jim Jarmusch and Aki Kaurismaki. Interestingly enough all three seem to focus heavily on music as well as the mundane (It was thanks to this that I found Jarmusch, as I discovered Tom Waits and Criterion dvd's around the same time...) yet they still retain their own unique touches.

So, this is an OT shot in the dark, as racking my brain for nearly the last 24 hours has not been fruitful. Many of you are so knowledgeable about film history, and physical media, so I’m hoping one of you can assuage my mind.

Within the last six months, maybe even the past three, I saw a letter written by Martin Scorsese to his film industry friends, circa 1980, about the need to act to preserve our film history. He cautioned them about film nitrate deterioration. I can distinctly see the letter in my head, with his “Martin Scorsese” letterhead. But for the life of me, I cannot recall the source of this letter. I know Scorsese has spearheaded the World Cinema Project, and that he has multiple films with Criterion (The Last Temptation of Christ, The Age of Innocence. We talk about a myriad of subjects here that are either directly related to, or tangentially related to Criterion, and filmmaking in general. Maybe the impetus for my reading this letter occurred here. I’m going to do some more searching, but Scorsese has been brought up a good deal in our Criterion discussion, and my timeframe might be a little fuzzy. I could spend another day looking through search results. Maybe somebody can cut out the middleman, and just point to a copy of the letter online. Googling his name, with a variety of terms (film preservation, restoration, 1980 letter, etc), as well as the organizations he either co-founded (The Film Foundation), or sits on the Board of Directors (The National Film Preservation Foundation). No dice as of yet. Mr. Scorsese’s communication with Robert Altman, Akira Kurosawa, etc come up readily, but inexplicably, this historic communique remains difficult to track down.

I thought I bookmarked it on my iPhone or laptop, but it’s not there. I watch a good number of documentaries. I just can’t remember which might have covered this.

Thanks in advance. I’d love to re-read what he had to say. Film preservation is something I really want to champion when I start writing.

Never mind, I found it. TCM presented the first annual Robert Osborne Award to Martin Scorsese for his work on film preservation. The letter in question was referenced in a video teaser on the channel in advance of the ceremony. The original letter was part of a petition Scorsese, his longtime editor Thelma Schoonmaker, along with staff members Mark del Costello and Donna Gigliotti sent to Kodak asking them to make permanent color motion picture film.

Here's the text, in case anybody is interested (copied from archive.org's crawl of The Independent):

[Show spoiler]April 5, 1980

TO: MY FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES

RE: OUR FILMS

EVERYTHING WE ARE DOING NOW MEANS NOTHING!

All of our agonizing labor and creative effort is for nothing
because our films are vanishing. I am not referring to the
terrible problem of black and white film deterioration with
which many of you are already familiar, but to something
more immediate — FADING COLOR. After only a few years
the color in our films will be irretrievably lost. The problem
of color fading in film is beyond the crisis point. We must
confront it now — it can no longer be ignored.

Your past support in voicing concern over this problem is
greatly appreciated but it is no longer enough. Merely
recognizing the fact that color film fades is useless. We must
act now or the films we make in the 1980' s will be subjected
to the same indiscriminate destruction as all those made in
the past forty years. Working with film stock that is
guaranteed to deteriorate in a matter of months is insulting
and insane. We have no choice but to take action to correct
this situation which is absolutely intolerable.

Eastman Kodak will do nothing to remedy the situation
simply because the immediate and outrageous financial
profits have priority over the quality of product. So long as
it is in their interests not to do so, Eastman Kodak, through
their total monopoly in the United States and many other
parts of the world, will be responsible for the destruction of
our past and current work. They are betraying us and will
have to account for the conscious perversion of the future
history of cinema.

We must act to speed-up and expedite the solution to color
stabilization and permanent color in film which can and
must be achieved in this decade. The scientists and
researchers working independently on this project do so
with pitifully inadequate funds. This is the only obstacle to
finding the technical solution to this problem. With our
help, that obstacle can be removed.

If we come together, organize and operate from a position of
strength, we will have the most potent means of attacking
this problem. An organization of cinematographers,
directors and other members of the film community can
wield power collectively, generate publicity and raise
money. Not only would we attract funds from private and
government institutions, but in our positions within the
industry we could enlist the support and resources of the
film producers and film manufacturers themselves.

We, the members and supporters of this organization, would
contribute annually to help fund the research and
development of color technology. We would insist on clauses
in our contracts that require a 3- strip black and white
negative to be made as an insurance measure against
unstable color stocks, and also have an answer print made
from that negative to insure proper registration. But it
should be mentioned that the 3-strip negatives are only a
temporary preservative measure because, if not properly
stored, one negative could shrink, rendering all three
useless.

The most practical preservative and economic solution is
developing a COLOR STABLE FILM. So, if you care about
your work and its future, then, for its sake, please lend
your name and support.

If you have any questions, ideas, thoughts or suggestions
please don't hesitate in responding: Martin Scorsese, c/o
Chartoff Winkler Productions, 110 West 57 Street, New
York, New York 10019.

United we have the power to find the solution.

Best regards,
Martin Scorsese

Two Spike Lee movies in 1 month? I would love that, but I doubt Criterion would do it...

Well, I'm going bite the bullet and buy a Roku streaming device so I can use my Criterion Channel membership. Something I can't do with the multiple FireSticks I have in my house.

Any recommendations as to which Roku to buy? I'd prefer to get the cheapest one that will do the job. I don't care about playing games or anything like that. I appreciate any advice you guys and gals can provide. Thanks.

I was thinking about it in the same way that they released both Beyond The Hills and Graduation, both directed by Cristian Mungiu in the same month.

... and the two Costa-Gavras films "Confession" and "State of Siege", which were both released May 26, 2015. It would be far from unprecedented. Doesn't make it any more or less likely.
