I saw something on the BBC News channel recently about a Morrissey biopic coming out in UK cinemas.
Yeah, I saw that. No songs and it's beforeche became famous. Seems a hit pointless to me.

Just one edition on this week, from 17th May, 1984 (on Thursday), but two editions on next week (The Smiths are on the latter of those two editions, from 14th June, 1984).

Two editions being shown this week on BBC Four, from 9th and 16th August, 1984. Next week, the 23rd August and 6th September, 1984 editions. The longer version on tonight is on BBC Four at 12 am - 12.35 am. Some good songs on the 9th August edition. Had a soft spot for Hazell Dean in the late 80s. The Blancmange cover of the ABBA song The Day Before You Came was a very good cover I thought and worth the wait, as I hadn't heard it until last week (it's on tonight's edition again). There's a classic slushy song by Jeffrey Osbourne and a Laura Branigan classic (she left the world way too soon).

Steedeel, have you seen any of the editions from '87 on BBC Four?

This is a nice thread, I love to reminisce on my younger years.
I remember lots of songs from 1983 (mentioned in earlier posts) and from the 1980's in general. I was 17 at the time and studying at college. I really enjoy listening to Pick Of The Pops on Radio 2 whenever I get the chance to listen to it, featuring chart hits from past decades which Alan Freeman used to do years ago on Radio 1.

Yes, the days when the charts were worth listening to.....not like the crap that passes for music these days - only my opinion of course, no offence intended.

81-87/88 Were my golden years of watching TOTP. Sadly coming to the end of that period in BBC4's reruns.

Yep, the same time period as myself. These BBC4 reruns have been really enjoyable with great music from that decade.

The editions from 1987 being shown on BBC Four this week and next are from April and May. There will be a whole month's worth of editions in a row which will be skipped by the channel later this year (two editions were presented and two editions were co-presented by the late Mike Smith). Hopefully by this summer the repeats will move into 1988 (with the usual The Story of... documentary and Big Hits compilation programme).

Loving these TOTP repeats. Well, apart from when Nick Berry kept getting to no 1

I watch the repeats hoping that somehow Ultravox will get to No.1 with 'Vienna' and Joe Dolce's 'Shaddap You Face' was in fact just a bad dream...

But every loser wins, Geoff.

Pity.

Is it the BBC's choice to honour Mike Smith's wish to not repeat his episodes? Or are they bound to something? What's up with that?

Only BBC response I've ever seen:

Quote:
Thanks for getting in touch about Top of the Pops.

While he was alive, Mike Smith decided not to sign the licence extension that would allow the BBC to repeat the Top of the Pops episodes that he presented. Since his passing, the BBC is continuing to respect his wishes.

I hope this clarifies the situation for you.

Best wishes,

Richard Carey

This week and next, all the editions from June 1987 are being shown on BBC Four (the edition on this Thursday evening, the 5th June, 1987 edition, based on the day it was originally shown on the BBC, was originally shown on a Friday instead of a Thursday).

All the editions from July are going to be shown by BBC Four. This week, the 2nd and 9th July editions, next week the 16th and 23rd July editions, and the week after just one edition is being shown (the 30th July edition).

Looking forward to this week's editions (a Bond title song on both editions).

I had absolutely no recollection of Broken English.

Jeez.

They were like something from 1978 rather than 1987.

It was refreshing to hear a song sung live (on a live edition of the show last week), by the artist Black. I was expecting to hear a different song, so it was a surprise (in a good way).

Hoping a CD album is going to be released eventually for this year of the show. They're usually released not long after BBC Four start showing the editions from that year. I'll be disappointed if Al Jarreau and Labi Siffre aren't on the album.

I have to admit my enthusiasm for the charts of that period is once again waning.

There's still some stuff I loved at the time though. We've just had The Voice by John Farnham, A-Ha's Bond theme the final Smiths records. And we're about to see the Hue & Cry hit the charts (and Wet, Wet, Wet too Although Wishing I Was Lucky was cool. Everything after that is pish. In my opinion. )

Two editions of the show on BBC Four this week (the 6th and 13th August editions) and just the one edition on next week (the 20th August edition). In two weeks time, two editions (the 27th August and 10th September editions). After this, it's where four editions in a row will be skipped by BBC Four (the 17th and 24th September editions, and the 1st and 8th October editions (
[Show spoiler]M/A/R/R/S were at No.1 on the 1st and 8th October editions, knocking Rick Astley off the top spot. They would be knocked off the top spot by The Bee Gees, on the week the 15th October edition was originally shown on the BBC).

So we're going to miss Pump Up The Volume entirely? That sucks.

They even featured it in the 1987 documentary.
