Being region free I’m thinking I might as well grab that set. My question though is what are the odds of Criterion upgrading with better transfers?

Yeah the AE set is more bang for your buck but can they be improved on? Either way I’m sure I’ll be picking it up at some point.

It opened in limited release on June 30th of '89, in wide release on July 21st.

Whoops, I couldn't exactly remember if it was last month or this month. But yeah, I was recently watching Saga of Gosta Berling and A Woman of Affairs(which is my favorite Garbo).

I doubt we'll be seeing it in July, but an upgrade of the Varda box set would be amazing. Maybe we'll get it by the end of the year?

My only prediction for July is Spellbound.

As for this month's, barking-at-the-moon, nobody cares wish list:

The Lady Eve (upgrade)
The Tenant (1976)
Lone Star
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
The Spirit of the Beehive (upgrade)

I have several on my DVR yet. I saw them dropping all the Garbo films, and pushed other movies to the side for the time being.

I saw Flesh and the Devil, Anna Christie and Camille. I’d already seen Ninotchka and Grand Hotel. I have Mata Hari, A Woman or Affairs and two or three others yet to watch.

Well, that's still incorrect, LOL. It opened June 30. I saw it on June 30, LOL.

Yeah, I often forget that would be an upgrade for Criterion. I have the Warner special edition DVD, but I don't know if WAC has any interest in upgrading it. Such a great film though.

Well, no, that's not incorrect. Citing either date as its release date is correct, it just has to be qualified as to whether you're talking about the limited release or the wide release. If you saw it on June 30th, then you obviously saw it some place that was showing it as part of its limited release.

I would be thrilled with that release, so I dunno. . . .

There's a part of me that's not convinced this release will be "sprung up" on us (like with Zatochi just appeared and I was like "whoa!!'. I have a feeling it'll be a little bit expected when it does arrive. More like an exhausted inevitability than a flat-out surprise.
