if you have an SPL you can get more accurate level settings... but the audyssey does a good job on EQ.

Run the Audyssey setup, and then fine tune it with an SPL meter. The Audyssey setup will calculate proper distances and delays, so it's important that you run that first.

If you decide to use an SPL meter, read Calibrating Your Audio with an SPL Meter.

If you don't have an SPL meter, you shouldn't mess with the results by ear. Your hearing won't be nearly as accurate as the results from Audyssey or an SPL meter.

Trust us, an SPL meter is worth the investment.

Just wanted to post, if you have an iphone there is an SPL meter app for the phone, you can use the mic on the phone or hook up an external mic with this app. i use it all time and is very accurate even from the phones mic. There are a couple out there so make sure you look for (Soundmeter) i got this app for $10 and was well worth the money and have tested it against the radio shack model and is just as accurate with the phones mic and even more accurate when using and external mic.

Hope this helps some people

The Audyssey does a good job of calculating the distance and levels. But with an SPL meter you can get an even more accurate setting. I personally believe using the manual eq gives better results then Audysseys EQ. But for distance, volume levels and speaker crossover the auddyssey does a decent job if you don't have an SPL meter.

Just wanted to update this the Soundmeter app is $20 there is another on called SPL which is $6 and get very good reviews, so for $6 it is worth a try.

I use the audessy as a guide but from that point I tweak to my personal preferences. IMHO

Radio Shack, either in-store or online. They have both digital and analog versions for sale. Some people prefer the analog version, but I prefer the large readout on the digital meter.

Using the YPAO calibration system (Yamaha's proprietary version of Audyssey), and then following up with the Radio Shack meter gave my system a noticable improvement. Surround effects were a lot more immersive and seamless from speaker to speaker, and stereo imaging improved as well.

+1 I use the manual eq on my onk and love the sound better than what audyssey had. But its all about how well you like it so listen and see whats best for you.
