Where I'm from, I saw it at age 7 and I think I turned out ok.

MPAA is a censorship outfit. I do not condone what they do in any way.

So with that said, BR (1982) is far too violent for a child. Subjective? Sure.

For a child, yes. For every child, no.

That's the key term here. Every kid has different thresholds and concerns at different ages and parents should judge the maturity of their individual children with respect to different kinds of challenging content on an individual basis.

I think kids should be kids as long as they can and shouldn't be subjected to adult stuff until their adults if at all humanly possible. You only get to be a kid once. You get to be an adult the rest of your life.

And that's a fine thing for you, as an adult, to think. When I was a kid, I wanted to be an adult, at least as far as wanting to watch movies like Blade Runner went. You could've plead with me all day, every day about enjoying my one opportunity to be an innocent youth, but it would've been wasted breath. I wanted to watch Blade Runner. And I did. And it was glorious.

My parents let me watch Aliens, Robocop and A Nightmare On Elm Street when I was around ten. I think I turned out OK.

Fair enough. I just don't think if I knew was adulthood was going to be like I would want to grow up. I think sometimes we shield kids from such awful things because if they knew they wouldn't want to grow up. but maybe that's me and my life.

If you were born in 1974 (I'm guessing by your handle) then you didn't see Aliens until you were at least 12 and RoboCop until 13

I agree not all children should be shown Blade Runner, but they are exposed to far worse on TV and computers every day of their lives.

Meh. I was nine or ten when I saw Blade Runner for the first time and I have yet to gouge out my father's eyeballs, so I'd say I'm doing alright.

My father let me watch anything. I watched Scarface, Maniac, Terminator etc at a very young age. The very first VCR and VHS we rented as a family was Terminator, I think that was in 86 so I would have been 6. As long as you raise your kids properly I don't think it's an issue.

Yeah, but if kids get everything they think they want, then we are all in trouble. That's the point. Children do not have the capacity to grasp the notion of consequence. I suppose there are parents who let their kids see content we can't even discuss here, but at some point that's child abuse.

Of course, I'm not anywhere near suggesting that a reasonable adult would make that claim about BR. I also don't give a crap about anything the MPAA has to say.

I saw it when I was 4 or 5. I just remember thinking Pris and Roy looked punk and cool. I owe my love of movies to my mom for not keeping me in Disney only bubble wrap. Only thing she never let me watch was Silence of the Lambs when that came out at home, and I don't remember ever being interested in horror stuff til I was in my teens.

I could never understand when I went to other kid's houses where they were so strict and uptight. It was like going from an Alanis Morisette video to an episode of Family Ties.

I was 11 in 1982 when BLADE RUNNER came out, and vividly remember reading about it ahead of time in the pages of STARLOG magazine. I wasn't into it at all that year, since all I wanted was the rip-roarin' adventures of Indiana Jones or Star Destroyers and lots of pew-pew-pew. Boy was I wrong. The Director's Cut came out in theaters when I was in college, and I was BLOWN AWAY. That 1991 cut is still my go-to edition, since it brings up vivid memories of that epiphany. Ever since, it's been one of my favorite flicks of all time.

I've noticed that much more with Doctor Who. Especially when I'm shopping at places like Barnes and Noble or Box Lunch. You'll occasionally see women get excited over the Doctor Who merchandise.

That's cool if Star Trek has a large female following though. Most women I've ever met detest it.

re: 13, 7

I disliked Blade Runner when I saw it when I was 18 around 2000. Couldn't believe what all the fuss was about. It wasn't until I got into other stories, video games, and movies in my 20s that I was able to understand and appreciate it. To the uncultured swine its just some weird 80s movie with rain and neon lights. Then when you're finally exposed to more Cyberpunk stories the universe begins to take shape and make more sense.

It's not very accessible. TBQH, I don't really believe anyone that said they absolutely loved this movie upon their first viewing unless they grew up during the early 80s while this stuff was cutting edge. Or They just saw it recently, perhaps sometime in the last 10 years, when similar Cyberpunk stories and films have already taken place. You need a bit of a frame of reference, some backstory, some familiarity with the setting to get over the hump of "wait why are all these humans robots" and what is the point. It's the building materials: the scenery, backdrop, atmosphere, music, and the alternative timeline that we love.

Cyberpunk is its very own genre, and unless you've had some previous exposure to it, it's not going to do very much for you.

Some of us had that frame of reference the first time out.
