Quick question: does Nostalgia For The Light share the same extras as the US release?

edit: never mind, I just found out the extras.

I managed to get a copy for a bargain price on eBay some months back (less than a fiver). One of my favourite films of last year, highly recommend it to anyone interested in Apichatpong Weerasethakul (I discovered him after watching Uncle Boonmee one in Bristol, alone).

Reminds me, I need to pick up Taxi Tehran. Great film, and I should get a copy because I'd like to see it again (and it's rare to see Iranian cinema on UK Blu-ray). Also perhaps Winter Sleep, but that would probably sit on the shelf for years before I actually watched it (I seem to remember it's over 3 hours long, and quite solemn).

I think I saw a photo of the Fopp sale and noticed Güeros for £3. I'd pick that up in a heartbeat - honestly deserved a Blu-ray, since it's visually quite stunning. Great Mexican drama with a lot of heart, and quite funny too. Might also be worth checking how much Arabian Nights DVD is, since there's 3 films in that set. Not seen it yet but would probably get that too at the right price.

This is back on again for this year, this time with Cemetery of Splendour included.

Super delayed response, but I ended up picking up the US blu for Arabian nights (though still haven't got round to watching it yet - one for the bank holiday weekend maybe!) along with The Pearl Button

I'm a little sad NWF aren't releasing any more blus (although I understand why) - their film selection is consistently superb and the PQ was often excellent (Like Someone In Love was beautiful). Will just have to see what I can import at a reasonable price.

They may still release things on Blu-ray if they reckon it'll be an alright seller. Zama, for example, might be the kind of title they'd consider for Blu-ray.

Then again, it seems they sold Mountains May Depart - along with the Walter Salles doc on Jia - to Arrow at some point. So maybe they're not confident with HD releases anymore?

I vaguely remember them replying to a FB comment saying it was too expensive for them to produce low selling titles (as excellent as most of them are, I imagine even the best selling ones don't shift too many copies), although I annoyingly can't find it now

I hope you're right though!

Keep an eye out for Summer 1993 in a couple of months, I saw it at LFF in October and it's excellent.

Has anyone picked up the New Wave release of Zama, and if so, would you be able to provide a/v stats on the disc?

OK so my knowledge of this stuff isn't great, so apologies if you were looking for something more in depth, but this is what my Sony BDP-S5500 says when I press the "Display" button:
  • 1080/24p
  • MPEG4-AVC
  • Watching the first 15 min the bit-rate looks to be pretty variable, first 5 min or so averages around the 30Mbps mark, the next 10 min dropped down to average around 22/23Mbps - Actually looking at the graph on http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/blu-r...ma_blu-ray.htm for the US release it looks pretty similar

When I watched it last week it looked pretty good to my (very untrained) eyes, though I mainly focus on the film rather than image quality on New Wave releases

There were 2 choices of audio
  • Dolby Digital 2.0ch 48kHz 256Kbps
  • Dolby Digital 5.1ch 48kHz 448Kbps

so seems to be lossy compared to the lossless DTS-HD MA on the US release.

There's also a half hour interview with Lucrecia Martel on here that doesn't seem to be on the US disc.

Excellent, thanks!

I was most curious whether New Wave opted for a dual-layered BD-50, allowing for more breathing room for the image, but since you say the bitrate seems similar, I'm guessing that means it's also a single-layered BD-25. Lossy audio is a disappointment, but it actually seems to have a higher audio bitrate? I think that's enough to let me know the US release will be sufficient, though, short of matched screen-caps showing a better encode. Thanks so much!

Just fyi, if you have a PC (or a Mac and are savvy enough to run Wine) with a BD drive, you can use BDInfo to get stats: https://www.videohelp.com/software/BDInfo

I'm also interested in this. Mostly because I'm curious how it compares with the Strand Releasing disc, I'm not sure which one I want to buy, at least for now.

It's dated on Amazon for March 11. Is that just a placeholder date then?

Nice! Is that the first older title they've acquired and done a Blu-ray for (Artificial Eye released it on DVD originally). They could potentially upgrade Three Monkeys since they already have the rights, or license some other Ceylan titles AE had before...

I also wonder if they'll do Ash is Purest White on Blu-ray, as they have theatrical rights for it. I'm curious to see Ray & Liz too...

I think so, it would be cool if they could do a 'complete' Ceylan set like the one released in France.

Have you seen Ash? I saw it last week and its probably my favourite Jia since 24 City. I wonder about a blu-ray though, someone asked them on twitter why Elephant Sitting Still was only getting a dvd and they replied that they would need to sell 900 copies which they obviously didn't think it would I didn't realise the numbers were that low.

Yeah they've been hesitant with Blu-ray before, hence why they only really bother with titles that have picked up some favour amongst both critics and audiences. I think they were even on the fence a little with Cemetery of Splendour as I think Taxi Tehran didn't sell very many copies, but obviously decided Zama was getting enough word-of-mouth praise, and Ceylan seems to be a favourite with them so they release most of his new ones on Blu-ray (luckily...I still need to get Winters Sleep and The Wild Pear Tree though!).

In recent years they've released a few on DVD I would've preferred to have seen reach Blu-ray. An Elephant Sitting Still is one of them, Arabian Nights and Güeros are a couple of others; I never finished Stray Dogs when it was on Netflix US but I probably would've bought a Blu-ray edition.

PS: Sorry, just realised I didn't answer your question - no I've not seen the new Jia yet! I think he's a really interesting filmmaker though so I hope they choose to release it on Blu-ray this year. I find it interesting they seemingly lost/sold the rights to both Mountains May Depart and 24 City to Arrow, but still managed to acquire the new Jia film...
