I think the reason Star Wars isn't doing too well in China is because the films are still riding off the Original Trilogy. The OT wasn't released in China until a few years ago and it was not received well at all (mostly due to Chinese audiences taking it at face value and criticising the special effects, not accounting for the fact that the movies were 40 years old).

A new trilogy set in a completely new time period with all new characters and very little references to other movies could do well in China, as it'd function as a clean slate for the franchise.

This is all true. The Chinese did not have Star Wars 40 years ago and so there is no nostalgia baked in. To them it’s just another movie series. To Americans and people from other countries it’s a must-see phenomenon.

Probably for the best. Think of the fuller lives they are living having been spared that nostalgia.
