Yes, the only way to watch SOL in true 4K (with HDR) is from streaming/digital retailers.

And, detail-wise (at least), it's no better than the Criterion.

Who did you order from? It is difficult to scratch a BD. I would ask for an exchange, that is unacceptable in my opinion.

I ordered it from Amazon. It had to be factory scratches. Also, the picture quality on this is still pretty good, so don't take my criticism to be too harsh. I'm glad it was put out in 4K and I'm still enjoying it. On the subtitle issue, I would simply like to see these boutique studios do a bit more to reach a bigger audience with more language options. Shout and Criterion are other studios that do the bare minimum on subtitle options and charge a premium price for their releases. It doesn't keep me from buying them, as I have about 400 titles between those two studios.

Just curious, why is it unsatisfactory that an English language film in an English region only has English subtitles? Independents rarely ever have subtitles outside of English translation of a foreign language track for a foreign film, or SDH subs for an English film, IF that. Subtitle licensing fees are expensive for independent studios.

Is the 1080p blu also a looker, a Clarice in Gucci beauty?

I'm watching the blu right now and I don't remember the film ever looking this vivid. It's nice. Some grain too, noticeable in the opening shootout.

Watched last night and was blown away! It looks absolutely incredible! The detail and colors are gorgeous! Kino did an amazing job here. The dinner scene was even more disturbing with the added clarity.

Lol what? Not sure what you were watching or what kind of TV you were watching it on but this UHD is an absolutely MASSIVE upgrade over the old MGM blu-ray. I was actually completely blown away by the A/V. Gorgeous film grain, a good HDR grade, deep blacks, razor-sharp image. This is a really really solid disc. "Blu-ray upscale" LOL LOL LOL.

Also, what is the issue with the packaging? Honestly I could give two sh*ts about the packaging, so long as they got the disc itself right, which they did. It comes in a regular UHD case (not one of those crappy eco cases that the major studios always use) and has a really nice thick slipcover. I often sh*t on Kino because a lot of their blu-rays really are lackluster, they use dated masters (which I know isn't necessarily their fault) but they have mediocre-poor compression and their black levels are often elevated. However, this time they got Hannibal right. This is a really really great start for Kino if this is the quality we can expect from them when it comes to 4K UHD.

If there's anything that I'd find even remotely annoying about Kino's packaging - which is really only an issue with their Studio Classics line - is how they use that really generic font on the spine (thankfully that's not the case with the Hannibal UHD - the font on the spine is the same as on the front cover). But otherwise, I do kind of like how their blu-rays are very uniform-looking on the back.

Well done, Kino. They deserve a lot of praise for this one.

NOW BRING ON THAT DOLLARS TRILOGY!!!

~Matt

As stated above, it's a great presentation. Watched it last night and it slays the BD.

Finally got to watch it last night. I am in agreement with the overall assessment of quality. It looks fantastic. I believe someone stated that some of the Verger scenes were a little rough compared to the rest, which I kind of agree. But it also may be inherent to how it was shot given that it was only those scenes specifically the opening with Barney. Something just seemed different, but then the next scene, the botched drug raid, looked amazing and the film pretty much stayed that way.

Regarding the film itself, I still very much enjoy it. The scenes with Moore being questioned or reprimanded by her superiors reminded me a bit of Foster's original performance. The way she spoke and held her composure made me think she was a good choice, however, there were a few more scenes where she really made the character her own and I just interpreted it as: it's been a long time since the first film, people change and mature, especially with all the stuff she has been through since Lector. Oh, and, just gotta say, Hannibal certainly picked out a nice dinner dress for her.

Now, Anthony Hopkins. He was as good as I remember, but I don't know if it's my own personal issue with letting myself go as I get older, or if the character was written this way, but I couldn't get over how out of shape he looked. (Maybe Mads Mikkelsen ruined this for me, i don't know) But when Hannibal is
[Show spoiler]captured and brought to be fed to the pigs
, his older, out of shape physique moved around so much I couldn't imagine him being a threat anymore. That quickly changed though when he said
[Show spoiler]"Hey, Cordell! Why don't you push him in? You can always say it was me."
And that's why he is who is. He saw what Cordell was thinking and gave him an out. Then as Verger
[Show spoiler]was eaten
I hated the way it looked. The shaking of the camera and fast motion seemed so cheesy especially when compared to the beautiful cinematography seen elsewhere.

In conclusion, I am so happy I purchased this disc and was able to watch it last night. Haven't seen it since the days of DVD.

They are often contractually limited to only include English subtitles.

On the topic of pricing, personally my threshold for a good deal is C$20 for BD and C$25 for UHD for a new movie.

For movies that have been out for 10 years or more, C$10/15 respectively. For a re-scan, C$15/20 is right price for me. Last Christmas season I saw 4K Gladiator, Braveheart, Saving Private Ryans, etc. at C$15; that's a good bargain.

C$30, I think is too high given that Hannibal is almost 20 years old. It does not really matter if it is coming from KL or a larger publisher. I certainly appreciate the effort but the price has to be marketable. Not to mention that this is geared mostly for people who are upgrading to a better PQ.

The BD from the same 4K re-scan is on sale at C$22. This very BD, however, is already included in the 4K purchase (C$30). If KL really wants to move UHD sales, the 4K should be priced the same as BD because that will entice BD buyers into buying 4K pack instead. KL will only recover 4K investment cost IF the 4K sells. And why would anyone buy 4K if there are so many cheaper alternatives available?

There is a diminishing customer base. Most people have the DVD since this is 2001 movie. Some would have BD. Fewer would even have the Hannibal Lector Collection BD.
DVD > BD (MGM) > BD (KL) > UHD (KL)

So KL's strategy to sell a better PQ version of the 18 yr old movie as an upgrade is to price it exactly like a new movie release? KL's marketing/sales is falling into the same old strategy of, 'we must recover the investment early by pricing it high', instead of 'let's build a loyal customer base by continuing to offer excellent titles at outstanding price.'

I do love the movie though . . .

This upgrade is DEFINITELY worth it. This is the first UHD I've been truly impressed with in a while. Detail and color are fantastic and easily bests the flat BD. I was a little hesitant to pick this up at first but I was able to get it for slightly cheaper by selling some digital codes. Wait for a sale if you don't want to spend thirty bucks but certainly keep it on your "to buy" list if you're a fan of the film.

Age has nothing to do with it. I'd argue that older releases have more work involved with restorations, etc, so why would they be cheap? Do you want to work for peanuts?
