I really like that red on black art but, FFS, enough with the BD-only double dips! This was just reissued last year. Where is the 4K?? Fox did the same with the Planet of the Apes films. Who's running the home video departments at these studios?

Way less people, and they've been limited to maximizing diminishing profits.

Maybe Paramount or Coppola wants to do a new restoration before they release these on 4K. Lionsgate just announced their Apocalypse Now 4K UHD set with heavy involvement from Coppola. If Paramount can put out Grease and Pet Semetary on 4K UHD, they can out out The Godfather trilogy.

I would be all for a 4K Final Cut Godfather box set if Part III was what was cut out.

The Godfather Part III has many virtues. On a purely visual basis it's a film of exquisite beauty
and in the same spirit as the first two. To exclude it from a 4K scan would be an injustice.

Besides the packaging, these appear to be identical sets. Both are 549 minutes.

I love Part III with a fiery passion. I'd be gutted if it was ever omitted from a 4K set (not that I expect it would).

Anyway, Coppola is reportedly considering a re-edit of the films, so here's hoping we'll get a comprehensive 4K package ala Apocalypse Now.

It's the most operatic of Coppola's films. Coppola is also an opera director and
The Godfather Part III is his Cavalleria rusticana (1890) which I understand
he produced and directed in the theater. Perhaps these images from the opera
will look familiar:

I'm a big fan of Sophia, too. I think people over-reacted to her casting. Perhaps
she wasn't quite ready yet, but I can believe in Sophia as a Corleone. I just can't
imagine Winona Ryder as a Corleone.

I hadn't heard about this. Is there somewhere I can read up on his plans?

The black version is listed 3 or so dollars more, so I'm going to guess it'll come with some art cards or something, and be the same besides that.

I Googled “Corleone Legacy Edition” and found TCM has a product page that describes the physical extras:

Quote:
Includes a disc of special features, including audio commentary by Coppola; "making of" documentary; deleted scenes; featurettes; historical timeline; biographies; photo gallery; storyboard comparisons; short films. Plus, a Corleone Legacy family tree, original theatrical art cards, and portraits with frame are also included.
It’s unclear if the family tree is a physical extra or the menu-based one that’s from the 2001 DVD extras.

Nice find.

Sounds like they took paper extras from previous editions and put them in this one.

This family tree from the Japanese blu-ray box-set was printed so small -- about 6x9
inches -- the print was too tiny to read. I can double the size of it if anyone wants.

+1. Yes, Godfather III doesn't match up to the first two - or Goodfellas released the same year come to that. But....not many films do! And I still love it regardless. Sophia Coppola isn't great in the film admittedly but its far from the absolute travesty its portrayed as elsewhere.

I meant to say that The Godfather Part III is in some ways an update of the classic opera
Cavalleria rusticana (1890). It has the same imagery and the same kind of dramatization and
visualization, particularly with old villages, church and church steps. Coppola was obviously
inspired by the opera's compositions and sets. And by the story. The play is a romance gone
wrong, about faithless women and two-timing men and a prolonged vendetta. It's no accident
that Michael's daughter plays a similar role as the girl in opera, that Michael's son is performing
in the Cavalleria rusticana at the end of the film, and the daughter dies on the steps just like
the romantic lead in the play.

Godfather III gets a lot of hate but I think it’s good. Could have use some trimming in the run time but overall I think it’s a nice way to wrap things up.

The white cover closely matches this line Paramount put out, so I'm guessing they'll be plastic cases

Just speculation though, we don't have any real info either way.

Off topic, but I really wish La-La-Land would release an expanded Godfather trilogy score collection, with all the period source music included.

Good idea. The period source music has never been released on CD before.
