Don't miss it. It's one of the all-time great outdoor adventure films and one of
the best westerns ever made. If you've never seen a Henry Hathaway film on
the big screen, you don't want to miss this. It has no agenda other than to tell
a thrilling story and it does that impeccably.

John Wayne will always be Rooster Cogburn to me, and Kim Darby will always
be my Mattie Ross.

Great movie, one of Duke’s best. That said I walked out 1/2 way thru the fathom event showing this past Sunday. Print was absolutely the pits. There was a blue line running thru the bottom section of the film, and the image was pretty murky (VHS quality). Came home and watched my pristine Blu-ray of the film. Shame on TCM for allowing such a below average print to be publicly screened.

One of my very favorite John Wayne movies!

That’s a shame about the Fathom Events print you were shown in your theater. That’s definitely not acceptable.

What a shame. That's no way to treat True Grit. I hope you demanded your money back.

That's weird, I thought all of those Fathom screenings were DCPs and typically used the same master that the blu-rays were based on. If it's a print, I don't mind if it's a little rough around the edges because that's part of the charm of watching an old movie like that on actual film.

I was thinking about talking to a manager, but as I was heading out of the theater, decided to just head home. The sad part is, I was looking forward to this for like 6 months. It was such a let down.

I had seen the TCM presentation of "South Pacific" last summer, and thought the image was amazing (pretty much like the bluray). Not sure what happened with True Grit.

Dude, if I were looking forward to seeing a classic movie on the big screen for that long, and the A/V presentation was that fudged up, I would have taken a few minutes to get a refund and (politely!) say to the manager how poor the presentation was.

Evidently there's a new 4K DCP available for screening. Hopefully it finds its way on Blu-ray eventually, as the current BD is a disgrace to Wayne's only Oscar-winning film.

Found the crackling on the mono track more distracting than the dated video transfer, to be honest. For example, around the part where the Indian treats the guy's hand. But I had a good time.

What I was surprised by is that John Wayne let the other characters call him fat. Twice. For some reason, I thought he was too proud. Plenty of actors who started young in the same period as him liked to pretend as they got older and fatter, without the movies ever acknowledging it. Look at James Stewart with Grace Kelly in Rear Window. They just caked makeup on him and never talked about the age difference. Anyway, I know it's a little thing, but it made me respect Wayne a little more.

Are all the blu-rays of this movie out of print? I could find used copies for okay prices, and a few new on ebay for fine price - but Amazon themselves or other "retailers" don't seem to carry it.

Is a 4K BluRay of this potentially just around the corner? Seems they have 4K on digital platforms...

I'm pretty sure I've heard rumblings of a 4K coming out. It's an anniversary year too, so I feel it's very likely. Either as a Paramount Presents title, or perhaps a boutique like Criterion.

As for the Blu-ray, Hamilton Book (great retailer) has it for $5.95

https://www.hamiltonbook.com/true-grit-blu-ray

Browse around the site if you haven't used them before, they have some of the best prices available, and also a great selection of books. Shipping is a flat rate of $4.

I doubt Paramount will release a physical 4K at this point but I just checked my iTunes and they upgraded my digital copy to 4K.

At this point we will have to hope for Criterion or a boutique label for a physical 4K release.

Criterion just released Paper Moon which never even had a Blu-ray release on 4K.

It’s a significant movie in Paramount’s catalog and yet they licensed it out.

Paramount was on a real catalog release roll which seems to have sputtered to a stop.

But thank you Paramount for Double Jeopardy, Bad News Bears, The Golden Child, The Court Jester, the entire Paramount Presents line, and even the other catalog titles that never even had a Blu-ray release ( like Bad News Bears) in the past few years. I loaded up!

Paper Moon was with Criterion for years prior, it has nothing to do with any recent changes in policy within Paramount regarding their home video department,
