Default Matt Helm

I think the most likely place for Matt Helm to reside would be Twilight Time. I believe it may have been talked about after the Derek Flint films did so well for the label. They also did the Frank Sinatra Tony Rome films. I believe that the planned 5th Matt Helm that never made it was meant to be a Matt Helm/Tony Rome crossover.

I think its the state of the elements that keeps it from our HD viewing.

Kino Insider - I believe it is public domain, but has Kino ever considered releasing The Deadly Companions? I've no idea who might hold the best/original elements, but I think a quality legitimate release of this with decent extras (the German DVD release has some good ones) would do well, being a Peckinpah title and lacking a previous official release in the US. Interestingly enough the film seems to be with StudioCanal in Europe.

With Kino doing such an outstanding job on The Outer Limits, I am wondering, KLI, if Boris Karloff's Thriller series for Universal might be on your radar?

I went looking into this, because I'm also curious to see somebody release this on Blu, and I found somebody alleging that the film isn't really public domain. The claim is that the film copyright was not renewed, but the copyright of the novel that the film was adapting was renewed. This makes some sense to me, but I can't find any specific information confirming that the latter fact would matter as to the public domain status of the former. So this might be completely inaccurate, but it does make some sense, and it would explain why there were so many fewer DVDs than comprable public domain movies like "One Eyed Jacks".

Here's the post I found, answering a question about why the film had been removed from archive.org because of copyright notice:
https://archive.org/post/286751/the-deadly-companions

Edit to add: I'm certainly not an expert, so anybody who understands this stuff can feel free to correct me, but according to this document, it sounds as if renewing the copyright of the novel would indeed leave the uncopyrighted film under an umbrella of sorts that would prevent it from being public domain (or not entirely public domain, if that is somehow a non-binary thing):

This new remake got me curious about "A Bedtime Story". I'm assuming that it was brought up at some point, but I can't find it in a quick search. If it has, does anybody know what KLI's answer was? If not, KLI, what is your answer now?

No, you got it right the first time. I figured it was a no, though the fact that no specific reason was given gives me hope that it could happen (it's not officially "with another label" or "rights issues" or anything, just not at this time). Thanks.

To KL Insider:

You will know instantly the 2 movies I'm interested in with the questions below, but I'll ask anyway.

Of the, I believe, 3 remaining unannounced/unconfirmed 1960s titles in KL's Universal deal: are you able to confirm at this time if any of those are "espionage" titles? (Possibly more than one?)

Are you able to confirm at this time if KL has any Christopher Plummer movies in the next wave of unannounced titles in KL's StudioCanal deal? (of course, this excludes The Silent Partner)

Thank you KL Insider.

Studio Canal does not have the American rights to Chino or Massacre Time, and I don't think Chino is really a true Spaghetti Western.

Studio Canal does have the rights to the following, but none of them are with KL. Alberto De Martino's DJANGO SHOOTS FIRST, Bruno Corbucci's THE THREE MUSKETEERS OF THE WEST, Enzo G. Castellari's BLOOD RIVER (Any Gun Can Play) and Enzo Peri's DEATH WALKS IN LAREDO.
I would be down for any of these as releases from Kino.

Now the the big question is when might we get the three Spaghetti Westerns Kino has on Blu-ray?

(Note: This is technically not the big question. The big question is if Kino has Extreme Prejudice, but not expecting an answer, but hopefully soon)

It may or may not be public domain, but the film elements are still with one of the studios (chain of title) no one can access the elements without a release letter from the rights holder. If the film is actually PD, a master could be created from existing prints of the film.

KL Insider: with your Paramount deal (or any future deal) is there any interest in “Sorry, Wrong Number” with Barbara Stanwick? A classic film noir that needs to be available on blu ray.
Thank you for all KL awesomeness!

KLI- do you know if The Black Marble is one of the S-C films available to license, and if any studio might have picked it up?

KLI, I know you guys likely have enough titles left to last well into next year but which studio is Kino likely to make their next deal with OR which studio still has the most titles that Kino would be interested in?

Insider question. Has Paramount decided they have no interest in sub-licensing to third parties any longer, and has Kino approached them?

They sure hold the keys to dozens of great films that never made the jump to Blu-ray.

Thanks.
