B&N is having a 40% off Blu-ray sale from now through Fathers' Day. Although this title is not carried in most stores, you can have it special ordered.

Sale price is $24, but with membership and/or coupons, it can be much cheaper. Check out the bargains sub-forum for coupon links.

I wasn't gonna buy this since I have the UK steelbook, but when I saw it in Best Buy (and undamaged no less!) I bought it--the heavy embossing looks nice and is reminiscent of the Godzilla futurepak, which I own and like. The Akira case has an ironpak spine, which looks a little cheap, but where the case snaps closed it resembles a viva metal box (like the Avengers 3D/2D case that you could get if you preordered Avengers from Best Buy). So I'm not sure if this is technically an ironpak or a viva metal box.

I wanted Akira for Christmas but didn't get it. Was in a Bull Moose store to pick one up and discovered that this version existed ... and even at $28.97 I decided it was going to be superior to the 2013 regular blu box even if the discs were the same.

But the center flip tray on mine is damaged. one of the hinge points is missing so it's not attached and the hub is too loose, the disc wants to fall off. for almost $30 I think the packaging shouldn't be busted.

Can't decide if should see if the store will help me out or just contact Funimation? How's their customer service?

The flip tray on mine, while not broken, is also too loose to hold the special features DVD.

So, I took a small clear rubber-band that I had lying around and wrapped it around the tray to hold the DVD in place. (worked pretty well)
It's not a perfect solution by any means, but it's not like I'm going to be using the DVDs very often, if ever.

Is there any information included in the booklet that is not available in the making of extras on the blu-ray itself. They say that the interview with the director in the booklet is exclusive. But, is it just a transcript of the interview done with him on the disc or its own thing? And, any pictures in the booklet not included in the storyboard extras?

Sorry for all the questions. But, if anyone can answer that would be much appreciated. I don't know if I want to spend $30 on this title again when I already have the excellent UK blu-ray from last year and the US slip cover blu-ray.

Does this help?

Also, if I watch the special features anytime soon, I'd be happy to check for any major differences.
I should also watch the film itself soon, as I've only seen it once on TV and that was years ago.

From what I can tell, the booklet is identical to the one from the UK SteelBook.

Here are some random pics of the 32-page booklet that came with my copy.

tHE jAPANESE 5.1 AND this Blu-Ray are an ANIMATION FANS DREAM!

Those English tracks are TERRIBLE!

If you've only watched this on TV/Stream/Bootleg without 5.1 you haven't SEEN or HEARD AKIRA!

Sony 4K modern panel that can do RGB color RANGE (The REDS on Kaneda and his custom super-bike) with that smooth Sony Animation preset! Then the Japanese 5.1 Audio Track if you want the ULTIMATE ANIME SOUND and EXPERIENCE as the ARTISTS here designed it!! Constant strong clear mono dialog with stereo separation up front alternating with the action sequences in full 5.1. The mind bending motorcycle gang into scenes, the sound of the ceramic brakes and motors screeching away, the explosions!, the jet-ski tunnel scenes, the search for Kaneda and Tetsuo with tanks and helicopters roaring around Neo Tokyo in the rear speakers. Then the funeral organ entrance with the choir chanting and bells!

See and Hear how influential this film still is to this very day.
