That appears to be exactly what we are getting. I'm surprised no one has really keyed in on this, yet, but the new release does seem to include the U.S. premiere version (approx. 146 minutes, of course), which would not be the Euro cut (1:59:38) or the subsequent US cut (2:23:46) which has been released on video. In other words, the 4K will actually contain a third cut of the film, that has not been seen since 1980. Hence the specific detail in the press release:

The 4K remastering is of Kubrick’s original 146 minute version of the film which premiered in the United States on May 23rd, 1980.

In other words, it sounds as though everyone will need to hang on to their Blu-rays, not just those with the European cut.

I'm pretty surprised that WB are delivering a cut of the film that Kubrick did not approve of, but perhaps the use of the U.S. premiere cut is seen in part as a way to get round having to issue both of the two previously available cuts of the film instead.

The Cannes screening is on Friday so we’ll know by then. It depends on the wishes of the estate (Jan Harlan/Christiane Kubrick).

It'll be great to finally see that original ending, but it's kind of weird not to also include the 144-minute version, since Kubrick himself made the decision to cut that scene (sort of like Sergio Leone with the grotto scene from TGTBATU).

And yes, I know Kubrick also edited the 119-minute version himself. But in the case of the 144- vs. 146-minute cuts, it's one sequence that could be easily seamlessly branched.

As soon as I received Warner's email I jumped here to comment!

I don't want to get my hopes up. They do mention the original premiere running time and the exact day of the release. But they don't make a big deal out of this, when this is MAJOR news. Let's hope for the best!

That was more of a special case I think re: Chris Nolan's involvement. For all the grief I've apportioned to him - rightly or wrongly - for how the restoration of 2001 turned out, only he would've pushed to get the OG mix featured on the new disc of 2001.

Pretend for a moment that I don't know anything about metallurgy, engineering, or physics, and just tell me what the hell is going on: If they're supposedly doing all 146 minutes in 4K with HDR, how hard/expensive would it be to provide the the classic American & Euro cuts (which have no additional footage AFAIA) as well with seamless branching?
