That’s incredible. I wonder if they could ever salvage that footage because it’s obvious they filmed it.

I always thought there should have been a scene where Jack finds the scrapbook. It’s just weird how it’s on his table with no explanation.

While pretty damn faithful to the book, I enjoyed A Clockwork Orange much more as a film.

Notably based on the U.S. edition of the book, where the ending and where Alex ends up is far more ambiguous, since the final chapter was removed.

Have a listen to this if you want to hear more about filmed scenes that didn't make the cut, plus other insane trivia.

And while I love the shot of Danny and Wendy watching TV during the blizzard, I also love the smash cut to a nervous Danny opening the door to his catatonic father's room with Bartok already kicking into gear (not to mention the added sense of isolation created by removing TV watching in general from the Euro cut). I could go either way on that trim.

Other than that there's not a whole lot I find myself missing when I watch the Euro cut. I know many dislike the doctor scene being removed entirely but I think that works really well actually. The direct transition from Danny's vision of blood to driving up to the Overlook is incredibly foreboding. I also love the transition from the Penderecki (?) track to Carlos's music that creates. And the doctor scene is one your 'bloat' scenes IMO: it spells out Jack's alcoholism and child abuse very early on when those character details are better handled later in the film and also brings the film's momentum to a halt. Probably Kubrick's best non-Hallorann cut in the movie for me (though I suspect you'd say it's the removal of the spooky skeletons ).

Yeah, the scrapbook scene/scenes - which included Jack seeing newspaper clippings about the Grady murders - would have explained Jack's remark to Delbert Grady in the bathroom: "I saw your picture in the newspaper..."

Here's a portion of the original script with Jack and Wendy talking about the scrapbook (apparently there was the scene of Jack alone discovering the scrapbook, then later talking to Wendy about it and showing it to her):

I wasn't all that fond of Harris' The Silence of the Lambs, but then it's been a decade and a half since I read it.

I only saw the Euro cut for the first time a few years ago, whereas I've seen the North American cut maybe 20 times over the years. It's still the version I prefer, but after watching it the other night after not having seen the 144-min cut in maybe 5-6 years, I can see why some stuff was cut out and if this was the first time I was seeing the film, I likely would've been much more critical of its pacing. However, I also don't totally agree with everything that was cut out of the Euro version.

What I think was wisely cut out of the film:
- many of the scenes with Wendy, Jack and Ullman touring the hotel slow down the pace of the film
- Shots of Wendy wheeling the breakfast to Jack
- Shortened shots of Jack throwing the tennis ball
- Pretty much all of Hallorann's trip from Florida to Colorado and all that Sno-cat stuff
- the shot of Wendy in the kitchen with the TV anchor talking about the search for the "missing Aspen woman" feels unnecessary

What I feel should've stayed:
- the entire scene with the doctor, Danny and the ensuing conversation with Wendy where she explains Jack's drinking problem - I felt this was important development for both Danny's character and Jack's, showing that he was always kind of troubled. Even though he does seem kind of "off" with his personality anyway, there's not much mention at all of Jack's past regarding his alcoholism, the incident with Danny, etc in the Euro version.
- Jack's interview shouldn't have been shortened/removed, as it gave background on the history of the hotel - I feel that with this scene included, you can omit pretty much the entire sequence where Jack, Wendy and Ullman tour the hotel.
- the part at the end of the breakfast scene where Jack says he feels as though he'd been there before
- Wendy contemplating how her and Danny are gonna leave and the scene following where she tries to wake Danny up but is told by Tony that Danny isn't there anymore.

I'm kinda 50/50 on that shot of Wendy seeing the skeletons in The Gold Room. On one hand I feel like it's such a short scene that cutting it out feels unnecessary, but it also feels kind of hokey and doesn't exactly add much when Wendy already witnessed several apparitions.

I'd love for the Euro cut to be included alongside the North American version because they both represent Kubrick's vision and really should be included in the set. While it's easy for me to look past any kind of faults with the film due to my undying love for it, there definitely are some scenes that were smartly cut out of the Euro version even though I feel like it also cuts a bit too much. The Euro cut plays more like a straight horror film and gets right to the point whereas I feel that the North American cut is more of a slow burn and follows Jack's gradual descent into madness.

Oh and I can't remember who asked, but yes this new restoration features the white end credits. When was the last time they were blue? Laserdisc?

If this is correct, the 1985 Laserdisc actually was the last time it was issued on home video with the blue credits. I kinda like them more tbh, they match the credits for the opening of the film.

So with regard to the Euro Cut, AmazonUK said it couldn't be shipped to my address in the US. So I ordered it from base with another item. The other item shipped and the Shining is still pending. Why do I feel like this will be cancelled?

I've never seen the Euro Cut and because of this thread I am highly intrigued to give it a spin.

It's absolutely worth checking out. If this UHD doesn't actually include the Euro cut, I'll probably just buy the UK blu off Amazon. I want to have both versions.

as for the opening WB Logo... since it isn't the original Saul Bass version

Is it the static 1980's static shield or is it a more recent animated logo and if it is animated does it play any music over it?

Originally it was the Saul Bass logo no audio at all then the film starts.

Hoping for no audio on logo.

ah interesting, he doesn't mention Betamax but rest could be right

so what about the orig theatrical version ?
I would think those had to be blue

Quote:
The 1981 VHS, CED, and 1985 LaserDisc - along with the TV airing on ABC - are the only sources of the film that feature the blue font color for the end credits. All subsequent releases use white font color. One would assume the original theatrical release used the blue credits as well.
take it CED is collector's edition ?
was unaware of LD and TV showing too

Capacitance Electronic Disc (CED) Videodisc is what they're talking about.

I'd assume the theatrical version had the blue credits as well during its original run. Seems like the change was only made for home video and then they just stuck with those white credits thereafter.

It's the static shield, no audio. It's the same as the one on the current Blu-ray.
