Surprising pedigree in that it was directed by Carl Reiner (The Dick Van Dyke Show) and written by Jeff Franklin (Full House).

Fun '80s movie that still holds up!

I'll Remember April (2000)

I was on a Mark Harmon kick after Summer School, so I watched this. Also stars Pat Morita, Pam Dawber, Trevor Morgan (Jurassic Park 3), and a very young Haley Joel Osment. It's a decent coming-of-age movie about the beginning of WW2 and internment camps. Directed by Bob Clark of A Christmas Story and Porky's fame.

I've never seen Russkies, but wow, you're right, the premise is almost identical. I'm sure the settings (WW2 and the Cold War, respectively) take the stories in different directions though. I also assume Russkies is the better of the two movies, since it actually got a theatrical release and presumably had a much bigger budget.

It's streaming for free on VUDU w/ ads, which is where I watched it. It's decent and stars both Joaquin Phoenix and Peter Billingsley (Ralphie from A Christmas Story) as two of the three boys.
