I did manage to attend the Galaxy Edge preview on 5/25 though, which was fun and not very crowded given the limited audience. |

I had posted an xls showing player comparability a while back. I had mentioned some chroma alignment issues with the OPPO.
Here are some sample images poorly taken with my iPhone on an LG B7. This is the Scaling HD pattern. Just wanted to show some differences sending in 422 vs. 444 from a given player letting the display scale vs. the player. This gives you an idea of something things to look at. https://uc99db35430fad2d3848be6a556b...JVhQ/file?dl=1 The Source Direct and Auto images are from the OPPO UDP-203. As you can tell, it is off by .5 pixels. The Panasonic is the UB9000, which is spot on in alignment. The baseline is the test pattern converted to RGB and scaled to UHD using our own tools. It is not an HDR grab, so you are seeing PQ through Gamma on your computer monitor, which is why the background is not as white as the iPhone pics. The Panasonic does have some odd chroma ringing, which is caused by their chroma enhancement. Source Direct is the LG scaling, Auto is the OPPO scaling. Panasonic is scaling to UHD. We used our own software to scale the baseline images. Then used nearest neighbor to make them 400% bigger to view up close. Just wanted to point out how you really need to test 4:2:2 vs 4:4:4 into a given display, from a player. And letting the player vs. display scale is also something you need to evaluate, if you have the option. |

Yes, the new disc. We added the chroma alignment diamonds to the pattern once we ran into a display that introduced delay while scaling. The new disc has it at 2160p and 1080p. We wanted to include 720p, but was not an option. The 2nd edition has the pattern at 1080p, 720p and 480p.

![]() I don't recall how the last thread was created. It might have been created by an admin. I don't want to get in trouble by creating my own thread. As it is, I am nervous about posting in this thread, which is why I am trying to limit my posts to just answering questions. I don't want to violate forum rules with advertising, etc... |

@Stacey Spears is one of the test patterns related to tonal resolution?

hmm, Freakosaurus are you sure you don’t love us solely for our longtime (this from 2016) welcoming attitude toward tiny brachiosauruses:

I have never heard that term before in the context of images. When I think of tonal, I think of gradations. We have a rotating gradient (shallow) for banding and then various types of ramps (stimulus, saturation and tone mapping). We have a P3D65 in 2020, 2020 and 709 hue / saturation gradients / ramps. And we have bursts, wedges and zone plates for resolution. (Luma, Luma linear, chroma and RGB legal chroma)

If you're not seeing any banding, then you're golden. Reminds me of when the Panasonic 4K player first debuted, it didn't have a native 10-bit output (only rectified several months later with a firmware update) and so everything was upsampled to 12-bit. When the player was outputting 4K 12-bit 4:4:4 certain brands of TV like Samsung and LG were choking on the signal, throwing out posterisation all over the place.
I recall Stacey saying on the RED forum that he chose a ZD9 because it was one of the few displays at the time that actually had a proper 10-bit output thanks to its oversampled 14-bit processing, I'd like to hear what other panels he recommends for 'true' 10-bit performance. |
