Indeed, from the same RED forum I mentioned earlier I recall you saying a couple of years ago that most HDR TVs at that time did their processing in a gamma space which is why so many extra bits are needed to ensure the smoothest reproduction of gradients, i.e. 10 bits of HDR don't translate into 10 bits of gamma because of how differently the code values are distributed, PQ reserving what seems like a comparatively small amount for all that lowlight/highlight information. So to process 10-bit HDR properly you need ~12 bits, to process 12-bit you need 15 and so on.

I think today it is still pretty common for the panel itself to expect 2.2 gamma.

That explains a lot about the market, 12 bit drivers are available, but manufacturers are not in a hurry to spend the cash on 12 bit drivers and 15 bit processing. 8K resolution is cheaper

I’ve always liked attending CineGear (except for the year the weather was well over 100 degrees ) because the new stuff is neat and it’s held so close to me not requiring much of any travel and I find, no matter what the discipline, that enthusiasts in person (face-to-face) tend not to be rude or dismissive at all, as is sometimes the case compared to online.

It’s always good to get out and socialize in person. If you ever get the chance to cross the waterway at the time, I think Method (https://www.methodstudios.com/en/ ) in Vancouver has at least an annual Open House which might be interesting and fun for you.

The short YouTube video you posted of people attending CineGear you can tell right away they are a friendly bunch of moving picture enthusiasts. The gear keeps advancing and getting closer to deliver a better picture than what the eye see. Of course, the gear is equipped with better lenses than the human eye.

When I was in high school I took portrait, graphic design, geometry, 3-dimensional perspective in architecture, human sciences, psychology, social interactions, philosophy, cinema history, photography, painting, arts. We were a bunch of creators in the art of communicating life's essence.

Today we continue this pursuit anywhere and everywhere.

given the number of backlight zones (576), some professionals serious about purchasing Apple’s 6K monitor wouldn’t mind someone like Stacey or Kris to test it for evidence of halation….to see if it really qualifies at the ‘Pro’ level
