The back of my bought copy (with the corrected VC-1 encode) looks exactly like the one posted on page 1 of this thread. The rental copy (MPEG-2) is different.

I'll type the logos out from left to right in order...since they seem to be in a different order.

VC-1 Encode:
BRLogo - PG13 - SDH - Copy Protection - Recycle - 130 mins - C14 - DolbyD
"bonus material not rated" (In small print underneath PG-13 Logo)

The MPEG-2 Encode (The rental copy I have) Looks like this:
BR Logo - SDH - "Special Features Not Rated" - PG-13 - Rest Same As Above.

Are you saying that the old one (the MPEG 2 case) looks like this?:
BR Logo - SDH - "Special Features Not Rated" - PG-13 - Rest Same As Above?
Apparently he's saying that his version has no "special features not rated" on his packaging at all.

I missed the small text under the PG-13 box, it is actually there after further inspection.

Well at least the mystery is solved. If the logos are in one order it's VC-1, and if it's the other, it's MPEG-2. At least until someone proves the theory wrong. I'm just glad I got the right one without even trying. ;-) good luck to everyone else!

We now need someone to post the BDInfo scans for each disc to compare. Was the HD DVD ever scanned? Did the HD DVD have the crew member excised or did Warner actually create a new encode for this Blu-ray? Someone should really ask Jeff Kleist in the insider forum as he has good contacts at Warner.

I don't think this is really worth getting too bothered about. Admittedly I'm not doing direct side-by-side comparisons, but I don't see a real difference between the two encodes - both look pretty bad in general, with the vertical aliasing and some funky encoding in general. And while I suppose the fix that removes the crew member's head is nice to have, 1080p really shows how crappy a job they even did at that - it looks like a blobby Clone Stamp from the surrounding material, still very noticeably a flaw.

In all honesty, the best thing you can do to avoid the flaw is to never find out about it. Now that I know about it, both the guy's head and the poor cover-up stand out to me. If I'd never seen the screenshots, I probably never would have noticed it.

Well...*ahem*....I might be the guinea pig. That's how mine is...with the writing under the rating.

unfortunately, this should have had lossless audio, since the train crash and ending were quite intense in the theatrical mix of the film.

Wouldn't it cost Warner to create the VC-1? Why would they do that and how much would it cost?

They do their encoding in-house so not too much compared to other companies.

I think the question should be, why spent the money to re-encode and not improve the video and yet downgrade the audio
