It's all in the link that was provided, but my understanding is that yes, it is an extinction level event that multiple people/factions on the show were trying to manipulate rather than necessarily prevent.

I own that DVD but haven't watched it in literally years... Can you refresh what the issues were there?

Atrocious video quality, bad audio mixing, sound effect replacement in the English dub, and questionable translation quality in both the dub and subtitles.

I remember hearing the EoE DVD was like VHS quality and it was pretty bad when I finally got around to checking my set out lol.

The quality of the EoE DVD was so bad I just took it out after 5 minutes. Even though I had waited for a long time to watch EoE, it wasn't going to be for this DVD.

So does anyone have any recommendations on what are some of the best Eva figures out there? I’d like to get figures of 00, 01, 02, 06, 08, and 13. So far it seems the Revoltech figures are the best ones to get. Can anyone that has some chime in with what they think?

I've seen better bootleg vhs tapes than that dvd, its awful. They also added terrible sound effects to the dub.

I used to have the revoltechs years ago. They are by far the best.

For me, the Robot Damashii line or the larger Real Action Heroes by Medicom (but those are stupidly expensive on the aftermarket now).

I have the Revoltech ones as well and they're okay, but I prefer the Robot Damashii ones. You can still find them on eBay for not-too-crazy prices.

Just googled the Real Action Heroes one. That thing is so sick lol. Too bad I'll never have one.

I hear you. The new Metal Build ones look sick also, but they're pretty damn expensive as well.

Thanks for all the info everyone. The Real Action Hero’s line would be a dream to have. However, the price is just too much. I really don’t want to spend much more than $100 per figure. I think ultimately I’ll go with the Revoltech line as they are priced well and have versions of all the EVAs I am looking for.

I have the old Kaiyodo Xebec one in the big box with all the extras. I used to to have all the others and Rei and Asuka too but sold them all. It was pretty cool when it came out but probably doesn't hold up to the new ones.

Yeah, it is pretty awful. What happened with the US DVD is that Manga Ent. basically used the same master as the original, non-anamorphic Japanese DVD (dating to late 1999), but then filtered it to death while screwing up the gamma and then made some awful 6.1 up-mixes (as the JP DVD only had Dolby 2.0 audio) to top it off.

I can forgive the non-anamorphic part since the first JP release with 16:9 video wasn't released for another year (i.e. June 2003 for the box set, and Nov. 2003 individually), but everything else was an unforced error. And don't even get me started with how they botched the translation of one of film's most important lines (the one explaining the Angels' origins)...

As I pointed out before, Netflix's translation also botched it, and yet I don't see anyone complaining about it like they did about those Kaworu/Shinji lines.

I haven't gone through the Netflix translation yet, but I should clarify my issue with that...

I originally used the word "undertones" to describe what I felt was lost in the new translation, when a more appropriate word would probably be "ambiguity".

For me, the idea that Kaworu told Shinji that he loved (vs liked) him had more impact because it addressed the core of Shinji's issues, and presented him with a character who seemed to genuinely care about him and his well being, which is something that he hasn't had from basically anyone else in his life. Changing the line to "like" lessens the impact of the line and Kaworu's presence.

I commented on that particular issue because it was the one that I had been made aware of, and I perhaps spoke too soon and should wait until I've actually watched the show again before passing judgment

That's pretty interesting that something like that got messed up. There's so much strange and ambiguous dialogue in Eva, but that one seems kind of cut and dry. There are a lot of complaints I've seen that I consider forgivable, since it seems very difficult and confusing to translate, but that one's weird.

Any reason you think two different people got this wrong twice?
