Blu-ray Samurai

My current OLED reference title is Guardians Vol. 2. The dark scene performance, immaculate. Could be thanks to activeHDR. I didn't fiddle with common recommended settings on that disc yet.
May be a premature call as I only watched 4 or 5 and sampled scenes from a couple more, but based on what others have reported over the years about demo discs, it's a safe bet this will hold at least top 5 if not maintain it's #1 rank ![]() |

My list is:
Blade Runner (I’ve seen this at home lots, and at a premium theatre, both experiences were stellar). Saving Private Ryan (looks the best it could look before being seen in 35mm) Schindler’s List (watched this with Atmos at a premium theatre, haven’t watched it entirely at home, but I keep going back to certain scenes and they have done an excellent job on this one). BBC’s: Blue Planet II, Dynasties, Planet Earth II (Dynasties has Atmos, but I prefer the others, my Blue Planet II disc doesn’t perform well, it looks exceptional though, bummer). Nolan’s (Dunkirk (I’m always comparing this to the 11 times I saw it on 70mm IMAX, and for that reason alone it’ll never be my top, it looks like a DVD or Blu-Ray in comparison, I saw Interstellar and the others in 70mm IMAX also, but so long ago, and I wasn’t as much of a A/V enthusiast as I currently am, which I don’t like, since I used to watch way more films, and now it’s about the presentation, my 65” 850c destroyed me as a cinephile a little, it’s tough going to 55”, but these Nolan titles are super difficult to pick one that stands above the rest, not too big on Inception or Batman Begins), The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, The Prestige (looks significantly better on my B8, it never looked this good on my E6), Interstellar. Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin (all of these are throughly stunning, not too far away from the Nolan’s). Alien (I watched this disc 13 times in 5 days, that’s how good it is). 2001: A Space Odyssey (this looks significantly better than on the E6) Evil Dead II & The Deer Hunter (Studio Canal is doing an exceptional job) Phantom Thread (honourable mention to Anima, PTA will always make every list like this). Mission Impossible: Fallout (I could easily see this being replaced by The Shining, or Apocalypse Now, or the WB October titles. Paramount honestly did a great job on all of these M:I Films). Toy Story (I haven’t received the second or third film yet, because they’re so expensive where I am, but just turned 26, and my best friend gave me this as a present, I think it’s stunning, and overall, the best Pixar film I’ve seen on UHD yet, it looked and sounded better than TS4 did at Ultra AVX, this’ll likely get replaced by Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4, Wall-E or Inside Out). I’m expecting They Live in the mail, don’t know how it’ll stack up, but I wasn’t too blown away by the Carpenter SC films. Christine looks great. TVs: 65XBR850c 55” OLED E6P 55” OLED B8P (All of these are terrific) Audio Receiver: Onkyo 646 (POS, should’ve gone for Denon). Last edited by Tristold; 07-22-2019 at 01:50 PM. |

Nice to do an updated top 10 list with the titles I own so far.
These are the ones I would use to promote the format to friends, family etc. -Alien -Aquaman -John Wick 2 -Pacific Rim -Batman Returns -Mad Max Fury Road -Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children -The Mummy (1999) -Mission: Impossible -The Evil Dead I've included Mad Max, Miss Peregrine and Aquaman to show the obvious eye candy when it comes to "bright" and "very colorful" modern day movies. John Wick 2 and Pacific Rim for their "dark" contrast scenes. And even though these are all very nice to look at indeed, my personal preference goes to the way how catalogue titles that were shot on film are handled on UHD. So I think I have a little bit of everything here with this top 10. ![]() |

I'm not using an OLED (sure that movies look even better on an OLED, it's just that we don't want to replace the tv we have atm, it's not that old and it's still a gorgeous screen (Samsung KS8000).
There are many films we've watched, so I may be forgetting some, but here goes: - How to Train your Dragon 1-3. Think those are my favorites so far. They look gorgeous as hell; I never saw the movies before, so seeing them for the first time ever....in 4k...was magnificent. - Ready Player One - Planet Earth 2/Blue Planet 2/Dynasties documentaries. WOW. Would love to see them on a 65 inch screen (55 inch atm). - Avengers Infinity War - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 - Despicable Me 1-3 movies - Planet of the Apes, 2 + 3 in particular - Coco (that scene on the bridge....amazing) - Valerian (it was the first 4k movie we watched iirc) - Wreck it Ralph & Ralph Breaks the Internet - The Incredibles & The Incredibles 2 Still so many movies to watch though. |
