Nope. Even 6 the worst in the series shouldn’t be lost.

Halloween IS a slasher. It’s the original slasher. That’s not a bad thing.

Black Christmas was more a who done it. Halloween paved the way for a maniac on the loose slasher.

Do you all think Slumber Party Massacre will get Collector's Edition treatment? I was surprised to see it was just a normal release on Shout Factory.

What about just Dr Giggles and Tales from the Darkside, Demolition Man, End of Days (since it's a holiday movie it might make sense for december), Breakdown, Deadly Friend, Company of Wolves, Childs Play 2 and 3, My Bloody Valentine and something like that?

I'd buy a CE of Dr. Giggles in a heart beat. It's just too bad Larry Drake is deceased

Also it was heavily edited for a R rating but I doubt SF would include the scenes,if they exist.

I say there’s a very good chance of them being announced.

The "first slasher" probably predates both Black Christmas and Halloween, possibly by a decade or more, but good luck coming up with a consensus as to what that film is, though.

A. More than 50% of all films in the slasher subgenre qualify as a "who done it", and that's probably an extremely conservative estimate.

B. Black Christmas
[Show spoiler]actually fails as a "who done it" because we never actually find out who did it.

Scream Factory mined the MGM library for years. It got to the point where many folks were declaring that Scream Factory's days were numbered as they were getting to some pretty bottom of the barrel dreck at one point. This was before the Sony/Warner/potential Paramount Deals. I have little doubt that we will eventually see more Scream Factory editions of MGM titles but outside of double (or triple) dip releases of big name properties It's doubtful that Scream Factory is going to focus on MGM titles for some time.

Very unlikely though not impossible. More likely is that in the very near future we'll see either a) New Steelbook releases of the film(s) with fresh 4k scans, or b) A new box set housing all 3 films together (with fresh new 4k scans).

If Psycho is a slasher, it's not the first, either. Horrors of the Black Museum, Circus of Horrors and Peeping Tom probably contain more slasher DNA than Psycho and all three predate it. It might not even be Hitchcock's first, as an argument (not one I totally agree with) could be made for The Lodger.

True. All these early films are proto-slashers. They set the groundwork for the later slashers. Unpopular opinion, but I think Halloween also classifies as a proto-slasher. The first true American slasher movie was Friday the 13th and it's off the back of that movie the slasher boom was born and countless imitators went to work on their own similar movies.

I am enjoying all the Hammer, Lewton, and some of the Universal releases but do they have any more Naschy volumes to release?

I would still look to Halloween as the start of the cycle, production-wise. It was still in / back in theaters while F13 was being produced and there were other "true" slashers, already in production, possibly completed, before F13 had been released. Allegedly, To All a Goodnight beat it by a few months. Prom Night and Terror Train went so far as to feature Jamie Lee Curtis.

Halloween is a true slasher, and the grandfather of the golden age of slashers from the late 70s through the 80s. Later films may have upped the body count and gore factor, but they were all clearly inspired by the success of Halloween. And, yes, like all good movies Halloween also had its inspirations including Psycho, Black Christmas, the Italian gialli, et. al. but that doesn't discount its own influence on the sub-genre.
