They weren't released to general theatres of course. That didn't start happening until the 70's. I'm not sure how they were viewed.

They were called "stag movies". Used to come mostly in 8mm silent. Mostly. For bachelor parties (when strippers were too expensive) and college fraternity "smokers". B&W, silent and short, and VERY old, even back in the '60's when I saw a couple. And usually a bit silly!
