Check out "Ghost World"

Geeky humor that really snarls pervades this movie riff on the legendary underground comic/graphic novel by Daniel Clowes. Mopey high schooler Enid (Thora Birch) and her equally disaffected friend Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) are a couple of slackers with a penchant for hurtful practical jokes. But when Enid begins to bond with one of their targets (Steve Buscemi), look out -- teen angst might give way to real feeling.

You be glad you did.

'Green Street Hooligans' with Elijah Wood.
Got it off Netflix when I stumbled across it in a Family Video... definitely worth a rental.

Billy Jack from 1971 is a great film,it's getting a blu ray release soon! Other pretty good sleepers that to do have Blu releases are War Inc.,Transsiberian,Sukiyaki Western Django,Redbelt,Sleuth,Hell Ride,and Bubble!!!

Devil's Backbone (2001, Spanish) from the director of Pan's Labyrinth is pretty creepy (just don't watch the trailer it gives one of the scares away) and has a great look to it. I've probably seen this a half dozen times.

Rocco and His Brothers (1960, Italian) from director Luchino Visconti - I saw this years ago and just remember really liking it and it was pretty brutal. Great B/W cinematography.

The Fourth Man (1983, Dutch) from director Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers, Basic Instinct, Total Recall, etc.) is a bizarre, blasphemous and often disturbing psycho-sexual thriller. Whenever I think about this film I remember scenes of deep, rich color, particularly reds. This is one of those movies I've seen more than 20 times and it never gets old.

Probably my favorite odd little film is Greaser's Palace (1972). It stars the guy who played the psychiatrist in the later episodes of M*A*S*H with Herve Vilachez (from Fantasy Island - you know - "The plane, the plane!") in a small role (pun intended). Written and directed by Robert Downey Sr. A kind of re-telling of the life of Jesus set in the old west. The holy ghost is a guy in a sheet smoking a cigar. It's pretty slow but weird enough to keep it interesting. It has some memorable lines of dialogue that you and your friends will repeat for the rest of your lives (I know I have for 25 years now). Oh yes, and the character Senor Greaser is, for some inexplicable reason, listed as a "Thanks To..." at the end of nearly all the Coen Brothers movies.

Straight To Hell (1987) directed by Alex Cox right after he made Sid & Nancy (and Repo Man). Although the plot is all over the place - a Mexican bank robbery and a failed assassination start off the show - it's a fun spoof of spaghetti westerns and stars the likes of Dennis Hopper, Courtney Love, Elvis Costello, The Pogues, Grace Jones, Jim Jarmusch, Joe Strummer and many others.

I guess I'll add one more to this list - Liquid Sky (1982). Probably one of the weirdest ****ing movies I've ever seen - and I've seen it numerous (more than 30) times. It's about aliens (who are never revealed) who are here for the heroin-like chemical created in the brain during orgasm. Unfortunately, everyone who has an orgasm dies. It's set in a futuristic transgendered punk world of spoken word and free love. Like Greaser's Palace, there's a lot of repeatable dialogue that's pretty funny.

Once Were Warriors - intense but worth it.

And for you blu lovers out there, watch Mirrormask if you have not seen it.

And I agree with Count of Monte Cristo. Was a great remake that I pull off the shelf once per year.

Chumscrubber - absolutely loved this movie, happened upon it from a friends suggestion.

Run Ronnie Run - this is in the tradition of stupid comedies lol, from the creators of MR SHOW and based off a skit character from a few of the episodes.

Blood of Heroes - old rutger hauer movie, for some reason it just really hooked me and i love the ending

EDIT: reading back through some posts i have no idea how i could have forgot BATTLE ROYALE, great import

Quite a few movies listed in this thread, so I'll inlcude a few that haven't been listed yet.

Watership Down (great old school animation, great tale of adventure and freedom...be warned, despite its appearence it's not for children as it can get rather violent and pulls no punches with death; read the book first and you'll enjoy the movie even more...it's true to the book but had to leave quite a bit out)

The Plague Dogs (from the same author as Watership...get the imported version if you can, the American version changed the ending from the novel to make it "more palatable" to American audiences; this is another animated film)

Threads (BBC mini series about the aftermath of a nuclear exchange between the USSR & USA)

Masada (another mini series, its about a standoff between Jewish rebels & a Roman legion in Judea)

Living on Tokyo Time (a young Japanese woman agrees to marry a Japanese American to avoid being deported...the problem is that she's ambitious and he's a loser...touching drama with comedic elements)

Snow Falling on Cedars (another romantic drama...set in WW2; American soldier is in love with a Japanese American who is sent off to an internment camp)

Ju Dou (Chinese language film, tragic story of a woman who has a rich abusive and impotent husband...she falls in love with his poor nephew)

Iron and Silk (an American English teacher living in China falls in love with a student and learns martial arts, his romance gives him problems with the government...great drama but very hard to find on DVD)

I think I've just noticed a theme among most of my films....

Netflix has this one as an instant streaming movie in HD. I really liked it. Great music. Funny characters. Has quite a bit of nudity, so definately not for kids.
I hope it will make its way on Blu-ray very soon.

Great movie, have watched it more than once myself.
Someone else mentioned Grave of the Fireflies. Anything from Studio Ghibli is a must see for me.

A few of my faves:
VisionQuest (1985) - love the soundtrack
Kids (1995)
Streets of Fire (1984)
Quiz Show (1994) may not be considered lesser known now due to repeated cable showings
