The MCU is really Golan Globus with money.

I do think budget makes at least some difference in the grand scheme of things. But yeah that film -- which I had totally forgotten about, btw -- is a great example. |

Vertigo and Citizen Kane aren’t part of the top three best films of all time.

They are part of both of my Top Three. But I sort of need to limit these lists to a single language or something like that. Truing, for instance, to come up with the best 30 films ever -- in any language -- seems pretty impossible to me.

Vertigo frustrates me. Great director, very stylish, terrific plot. But Stewart is a complete control-freak and unlikable, Barbara Bel Geddes (spelled correctly?) is abysmal, and the mystery is spoiled way too soon and with very clumsy exposition. I hate the way "the letter" spoon-feeds the viewer.
Rear Window, on the other hand, is one of all-time top ten. |

I love Hitchcock but I found Vertigo very overrated. The ending was laughable. Seriously, I literally laugh. It was ridiculous. My favorite film would have to be North By Northwest.

I prefer North by Northwest to Vertigo. Citizen Kane may be of cinematic historical interest, but hasn't aged as well as some other movies of its era. |

If, OTOH, I picked my favorite 30 films in, say, the Top 15 languages of import, again to ME, then that list would still have some serious flaws. But it would mean more to ME. That's what I was attempting to get at. |

Toy Story 3 was a much better ending to the franchise than Toy Story 4.

John Ford is not the best director of westerns.

I think when the last vestiges of film scholars born before 1960 go away, those two movies will take their place. Vertigo for sure.

All of Hitchcock’s movies from the 50’s time period on have the stink of 50’s corporate filmmaking all over them. I would personally go with darker Hitchcock, like Shadow Of A Doubt or Frenzy or Rebecca(even Dial M for Murder is fun).I’m not the biggest Hitchcock fan so my viewpoint might be skewed to some.

And Teresa Right and Joseph Cotten are tremendous in Shadow of a Doubt, while Rebecca is one of my favorite movies. We're probably on a closer lave length than you think. ![]() As to Frenzy, I remember appreciating it years and years ago, but it's been SO long since I've seen it. I really need to rectify that. Thanks for reminding me! |
