They created a website with a countdown clock for a BD re-release? That would be pretty dumb. I imagine it's a bit more than that. I imagine it'll have at least the UHD releases out already from Kubrick included.

Including those UHDs would be best.

If it's BD only and released through Criterion that would be reason for the countdown (especially if it included every Kubrick film from Killer's Kiss to Eyes Wide Shut via WB, Sony, Universal and MGM licensing).

Yeah I guess that's possible. Especially if Criterion has come up with new extras for LOLITA and EYES WIDE SHUT, which WB could then use for any future 4k releases.

Even so, it's going to be a bit disappointing if they use the old masters for those films. Here's hoping someone's been fibbing about the progress on 4k remasters. It always struck me as odd that WB wouldn't want to capitalise on the 20th anniversary of EWS in some way.

Went to try to get 1984 on BD but the DVD was the only copy. Got Lord of the Flies instead then found out the case was beat up and no disc so brought it back and they will mail me one from the warehouse. Ended up with 3 more The Brood, An Actor's Revenge and broke my rule about upgrading but it was Vampyre so it was worth it. I only have 6 now that needed upgrading. I just wanted to buy those after I get the newer releases since I have the DVDs but I suppose I might just get whatever's on the list that I see whether its upgrades or not now.

If that box set has UHDs of the remaining Kubricks they better be sold separately.

I'm glad that Haxan is getting a Blu-Ray in October which is perfect for Halloween. I hope Onibaba will get a Blu-Ray treatment soon. I did rewatch the DVD of Haxan that Criterion did back in 2001. It's does not look too bad, but having an upgrade is nice.

That Blu-Ray of Clockwork Orange came out in 2007 or 2008 when 1080p was brand new. So it's going to look bad on modern day TVs like most Blu-Rays from the 2000s would.

It was a middling transfer to begin with, even noted as such when it came out.

The 1954 Godzilla movie has artistic merit to it. The other movies are fun trashy movies, but they are important to film history and pop culture. They use rubber suits and minitures giving them their own artistic vision to them in my opinion.

Robocop should not be in the same sentence as Armeggeddon . Robocop is a satire of corrupted American and does not take itself too seriously. Michael Bay wishes he is as good as Paul Verhoeven.

I feel like not every movie needs to be deep or artsy to get a Criterion release as long if they are important to film history or have some cultural impact to them. Stuff like Robocop, Police Story, Scanners, and Godzilla are totally fine because it is nice for Criterion to have variety.

Gotta remember the 2007 Kubrick releases also had to be simultaneously released on HD-DVD, which meant they hedged the encoding to accommodate both. IIRC they improved the encoding for ACO on the 2011 Digibook re-issue, but they used the same source master.

FMJ had to be remastered not long after as it was bloody awful on that first HD DVD! And yes, they were were among many WB titles that just ported over the bit-starved HD DVD encode to the BD.

Yeah, there were a handful of very early 2006 WB titles that were really bad that they eventually redid not too long after - Full Metal Jacket, The Fugitive, and Enter the Dragon were the worst offenders of those early discs, IIRC.

Yeah, it was one of those crappy 1440x1080 HDCAM transfers with the bodged horizontal upsampling causing aliasing, it had some awful banding as well, but at least FMJ got remastered within about six months IIRC, we had to wait years for Fugitive and EtD to be redone!

I agree, I’m a big fan of A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Dr. Strangelove and 2001. (plus Paths of Glory as part of my WWI collection). Those are really the only Kubrick I need upgrades on, already having 2001 4k. A big box set could get pretty expensive

I always hear this but, really, the original Godzilla doesn’t have any more on its mind or any more artistic merit than Tarantula or any of the American big monster films of the 50s. They’re both “cost of science” films but I guess since Godzilla is Japanese (“foreign”), people are willing to overlook the dull human melodrama in the film, which stuff like Tarantula - and pretty much every other Zilla film - forgoes entirely.

The legacy and worth of the Godzilla series IS stuff like Mothra vs. Godzilla, which is greatly superior to the original film.

I love them all but I really just want to upgrade Clockwork, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut. Shining of course has a separate UHD coming.

Anybody here got the Jean Vigo release? That’s the most important Criterion release, in my opinion. He would’ve been the greatest had he lived longer. He made poetry out of nothing

If I could submit a poll I would... but who here thinks Spine #1000 will be either:

Godzilla box set

or

Kubrick box set

?
