Looking forward to seeing what extras they come up with. Here's an idea for a couple, from the BBC archives:

- The Power of the Witch: Real or Imaginary? (documentary from 1971, also featuring Sanders)

- The Witches of Pendle (1977 - A dramatisation of a real witch-trial that took place in Lancashire in 1612)

Pretty sure both survive (the former is on YouTube). Unfortunately the BFI don't appear to hold materials for either so I expect both are very unlikely.

Pity we won't see the hard-core "export" version of Derek Ford's "Secret Rites"

Definitely picking this up, I hope the individual cases come with proper covers though as the stills look a bit crap and I wish they'd stick with clear cases for all their releases.

Does anyone know which case size the set uses?

Would look so much better with clear cases so i would like to purchase a few.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I've pretty much done that with all my old blue blu-ray cases. These are the super thin ones, hardly a spine at all. They used the same ones in the Jarman sets.

They used ultra-slim ones in the Woodfall set, so it could be like that? Shame they didn't opt for the clear ones that weren't so thin that Arrow have used with things like Sartana and Female Prisoner Scorpion (or MoC with their Buster Keaton set).

Glad the Kore-eda set has evolved from "well, it only really has a panel discussion and the films, I'll just watch the rereleases in Picturehouse at £5 per film" to adding new commentaries followed by carrying over legacy extras, making it a must purchase! Still have some BFI discs to watch but I won't sleep on this set.

CEX has some BFI titles down to only £5, including The Adventures of Prince Achmed and The Comfort of Strangers. Schrader has basically confirmed a Criterion of Comfort through Facebook, but still a good deal.

They're Viva Elite cases if that helps. I'm not too fussed when it comes to box sets as I have my discs set spine out on the shelf so you can't see them...

...but I still know they are there

cheers mate,

Although i jumped the gun and already placed an order of 10x 11mm clear cases from eBay

My understanding is the cases in this set are the same size used in Arrows Female Scorpion set, i don't have the Jarman set so can't compare.

I will wait and see how the ones i have ordered turn out, hopefully they will do the job, so many different size cases out there, after going through my collection i will need over a 100 to clear the blue ones out.

The Arrow Female Scorpion cases are definitely thicker than the ones in these current BFI sets.

Used the zavvi 10 off code to put together a nice BFI order, went for the Koreeda set as well as Will it Snow For Christmas, La Belle et la Bete, The Girl With Green Eyes, The Entertainer, Look Back in Anger and The Knack and How to Get It (already have te prior releases of The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and Criterion’s A Taste Of Honey).

Pretty happy with that.

The new Flipside is now available to pre-order on the BFI's site. Released 14th October:

Quote:

The 39th release in the long standing BFI Flipside strand sees the release of two far out British films. Exploitation director Derek Ford’s (The Wife Swappers) Secret Rites and Malcolm Leigh’s Legend of the Witches.

Legend of the Witches (1970, 78 mins): The originally X-rated film documentary which looks in detail at previously hidden magic rites and rituals. Sharing the secrets of initiation into a coven, divination through animal sacrifice, ritual scrying, the casting of a 'death spell', and the chilling intimacy of a Black Mass. It also explores Britain's hidden pagan heritage and its continued influence on our lives today.

Secret Rites (1971, 47 mins): Part Mondo movie, part countercultural artefact, this strange mid-length 'documentary' by sex film director Derek Ford lifts the lid on witchcraft in 1970s Notting Hill. Mystery band The Spindle provide the groovy, psychedelic sounds while tentative occult enthusiast Penny and a serious-sounding narrator introduce the viewer to three ritual acts. Far out.

BFI Flipside is dedicated to rediscovering the margins of British film, reclaiming a space for forgotten movies and filmmakers who would otherwise be in danger of disappearing from our screens forever. It is a home for UK cinematic oddities, offering everything from exploitation documentaries to B-movies, countercultural curios and obscure classics, If it's weird, British and forgotten, then it's Flipside.

- Presented in High Definition and Standard Definition
- Worldwide Blu-ray debut
- Feature-length commentary on Legend of the Witches by Maxine Sanders
- Newly filmed interview with Maxine Sanders
- Newly recorded commentary on Secret Rites by Flipside founders Vic Pratt and William Fowler
- Newly commissioned sleeve art by acclaimed illustrator Graham Humphreys
- **FIRST PRESSING ONLY** fully illustrated booklet with essays by Christina Harrington, publisher and expert on the occult Mark Pilkington, and authors of The Bodies Beneath, Vic Pratt and William Fowler. Includes full film credits.
- Other extras TBC

"Newly commissioned sleeve art by acclaimed illustrator Graham Humphreys"

Where all the original posters and VHS covers really that bad they couldn't find one worth using? To be honest probably yes. No disrespect whatsoever to Mr.Humphreys as I like a lot of his work, I hope this is just a one off as the period artwork Flipside have been using since 2016 really suits the brand best.

The ones I've googled for Legend of the Witches aren't particularly good, though the one for Secret Rites is better. Personally I'm pleased with the news; I doubt this will be the new house style, probably just a one-off for a Hallowe'en release, and they couldn't have chosen a better man for the job.
