Default Don't Blindly Trust Retail Fanboys (Obviously)

Ask for sources.

Yeah, you're not going to get the full story from your local Blockbuster or any other source spewing their opinion of the moment. I was in buying a Wii for my little sister at the Future Shop (Best Buy) and the salesman told me that 80% of the PS3s were being returned defective. I already knew this number of his was crap, but it's unreal how he had totally convinced himself that this absurd statement was true. This blockbuster kid is the same type of delusional immature fanboy. They mislead consumers with their volatile enthusiasm and lack of knowledge.

Seeking better news sources, I trust the actual PS3 failure rate at less than 1% as reported by 3rd parties as well as Sony (0.2%).

Quality news is out there -- look for it!

"300" top DVD seller for second week

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "300" crushed the competition during its second week in video stores...

In the high-definition disc arena, "300" was the No. 1 seller on both the Blu-ray Disc and the HD DVD charts.

2. That studios care about $ not sales ratios. That Warner earned more from 300 on HD DVD than Disney did on PoTC 1 &2 combined or Sony did on Casino Royale...
I thought they cared about attach-rates?!

OK, we all agree now, they care about $$$. So, why doesn't Universal?

Time to raise that funny math again where they prove Warner (by selling all the HD DVD at SRP) actually has made more revenue from the HD DVD than the Blu-ray release (all sold at an unattainable discount).

Quote:
3. Disney did a PR that said that the sales of PoTC 1 &2 showed that customers were accepting BD. Now, since 300 sold more than both combined, what does that say about HD DVD being accepted?
That a new release sells better than titles most people already own? Let's see Warner beat Pirates with a catalogue title on HD DVD and then we'll talk.

Definately. A lot of people had just bought the Pirates 2 2disc.

Pirates 3, combined with the increase in deck owners and people buying the trilogy will likely do 150K easy week 1

So what? There are something like 400 distinct titles in NA for both formats. One of them chalked up those sales figures. What about the other 399 titles? THAT is what the studios are going to care about. It isn't easy to put out a movie with the sales of 300. They have to make money on the sales of other movies, and right now, BD is the best bet.

As I pointed out in that thread, plazman's previous position was that it was the comparisons for common titles that mattered. I think that changed when HD DVD had the better releases for the week (with Hot Fuzz) and with the sales ratios not being good for HD DVD for common titles in their first week recently (ranging from 1.7:1 for Blu-ray to 2.36:1 for Blu-ray for 4 different titles). I doubt he will actually address my questions to him though. Playing dumb seems to be his new thing. I tried to send him a PM pointing that out before, but his box was full.

This is so funny...if WB is so smart as to be neutral so it can release on both formats and reap the $ from both....then why hold back The Matrix trilogy from BD???

300 already proved that WB can get approx 200% more $ by releasing The Matrix trilogy on BD...how does this mesh with the above quote??? It doesn't.

I also had a good laugh at how he compares any 2 random titles (300 HD DVD to POTC 1&2). Since we are comparing any 2 random titles now, I also bet Sony made more on PoTC 1 & 2 than Universal did on KK.

Anyone want to compare 300 BD to KK HD DVD? Dollars or sales ratio...I bet it slightly favourable to BD...

It's also the same logic flaw that points out Blu-ray quality by choosing a title from June 2006: They fail to account for the passage of time.

March 2007: Casino Royale
May 2007: Pirates 1 + 2
Aug 2007: 300

Time flowed, and Blu-ray sales grew and grew. Despite give away prices on HD DVD players, Blu-ray maintained a 2:1 lead. Despite a flood of titles from Universal, Blu-ray maintained a 2:1 lead.

Nothing has worked for HD DVD. And ahead is the Q4 slaughter.

How much did it cost Warner to make all them special features on that HD DVD of 300? I can remember reading somewhere that it cost around $5million. That sounds a little excessive, but if you take that into consideration, didn't they actually lose money?

Speaking of the special features in 300, I just saw a commercial on ESPN that was only advertising 300 on HD DVD and specifically mentioned the PiP and included game on that version (they end with...Buy 300 on HD DVD Today or something to that effect). Did that commercial run before 300 was released or was it in response to 300 on blu outselling 300 on HD DVD by such a large amount? I assume the commercial is from Warner and if that's the case, it's a little disappointing. I'd expect a supposedly neutral company to advertise both equally.

Maybe they are desperate to get rid of the HD-DVDs cause they realize they spent too much money on something that isn't selling as well as they'd like it to. Why advertise the one that is already selling out, advertise the one that is not...

More money down the toilet. I'm starting to think Warner likes pissing away profit.

In the rant threat others are saying there is a BD counterpart ad. And that one mentions the PS/3.

And since 40% of PS/3 owners don't even known they have a Blu-ray player, which ad do you think has more impact?

(1) Blah, blah, blah extras
(2) Hey dummy, you could play this on your PS/3
