That isn't a bootleg.

There's one right there. Same as the crap that has flooded eBay recently. They make it obvious by wrapping all of the box sets together and placing a sticker over it, something about being sold only as a set. |

We were actually off topic talking about Leave Her to Heaven and the dubious legality of its Spanish release. ;^_^
As for the Eva holiday release, I cannot believe I walked out of that store with that release, basically for free. Very tempted to flip it because it’s going for $400+ on eBay, but in that case, I have other OOP releases that would go for similar amounts (Darker Than Black Blu-ray set, Halloween BD collection). Why should I make an exception for Eva, even though I’m broke AF? This has things that may not carry over to any future set, like the original versions of eps. 20-24, and the ADV dub and subtitles, plus all the extras. |

I wouldn't worry about any future US home video release not having both versions of 21-24, as the precedent's already been set with the Platinum DVDs. There's no reason that King Records wouldn't license them out again like they did 15 years ago.
As for the extras, it's an interesting situation. All the on-disc extras for the Platinum singles (except the clean OP/ED and several episodes worth of the raw AR footage used to time the original JP voice recording sessions) were produced by the ADV Films dub cast/crew, and thus by definition are worthless (and chock-full of inaccuracies to boot). At least the booklets that came with each of the seven Platinum DVD singles were good though, as they were 1:1 ports of their Japanese "Renewal" counterparts (except translated into English, obviously). If by some miracle some of the original Japanese extras found on the Blu-ray box and "Archives of Evangelion" DVD box (e.g. Genesis 0:0 and Genesis 0:0', and/or the special programs produced to promote Death & Rebirth's theatrical release) were made available for licensing, that would be a completely different story. |

I have a feeling Khara won’t allow both versions to be included, but you never know. The ADV dub is a big mystery. Of course, if Discotek gets the Blu-ray license, you know they would try for both dubs, and I guess it’s possible Khara would be okay with including it since they were okay with FUNi including their original in-house subtitle track for 3.33 in addition to theirs, but I guess you never know. I actually enjoy the voice actor commentaries, etc.

Yeah both dubs have their pros and cons, but I would like to have both. It’s the same reason I wouldn’t mind owning all of the old Sailor Moon dub (of which the S/SuperS half is among the worst ever IMO, although I can laugh at it now that Viz has redubbed it). It’s a part of the show’s history.

One thing I don't like about the platinum release (not sure about others) is how they changed the credits text to english in the opening and ending, especially in the ending where they changed the format too, instead of text slowly appearing and fading away, credits scroll up really fast. I know I'm nitpicking about this but I wish they would've left it as the original source.

It's more reasonable to assume that the only reason that Netflix is only showing the DCs of 21' - 24' is that having both versions in the same playlist would mess with remote-free marathon viewing, as going from Episode 21 to 21' to 22 to 22' etc. would be rather annoying. If they were to choose one version for that reason, they would get far fewer complaints by going with the DCs since they're the ones with additional content. I'm more surprised that they out-bid the venerable "FX" label. Remember when they were the pinnacle of bootlegs? Last edited by svenge; 08-06-2019 at 08:18 PM. |

Wow! That's a really nice feature, I wonder if other brands have that as well, I'm currently looking for a 4k player and that will surely come handy. I was looking at the sony players but haven't read about that feature.
