I have been watching Designated Survivor, starring Kieffer Sutherland, on Netflix and I am enjoying it quite a bit. It is offered in 4K with Dolby Vision and I must say that it looks really good. I have not noticed any compression artifacts in this series, so far, after having watched the first two seasons.
I am confident that it would look even better on a 4K disc, but this has been a very good presentation by Netflix. It is not something that I feel a need to own, either, so I am glad that I have the ability to watch it via streaming. |

The name of this site should indicate its primary focus to anyone and if you look here on any given day you can see most are viewing info about Blu-ray disc. A snap shot: Currently Active Users: 5303 (1719 members and 3584 guests) which implies a lot of lurkers here. For me, I do not know of any other site that offers the amount of info about Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray disc. For projectors, screens: AVS Forums and AVS Discussions ● For remote controls: AVS forums and Remote Central ● For Satellite: Satellite Z Forums and Satellite Guys. I do several more for speakers, AVP’s, etc. IMO, UltraViolet should have sponsored a forum dedicated to EST (ownership) streaming. The same for SVOD and AVOD provides, those folks need to get together and provide a forum but I don’t think it will ever happen. |

When the OP started this Thread it was just a question on what people preferred, but it sure opened a big can of worms and even to this day the controversy continues. Now people like Wendell want to break Digital down, it's not just Physical vs Digital. Now we have to do SVOD, AVOD, and don't forget TVOD. I say Streaming is Streaming and Physical is Physical! The other thing no one is talking about is equipment, set-up, and cost. Remember I said 10K for a good set-up, well that price has gone way up from there, especially if you want a good Projector HT! We previously had an extended discussion about home theater equipment and their associated costs; I do not see why you are using my post as a segue way to revisit that topic. Whatever amount we choose to spend here it is only necessary that we please ourselves. I have had Netflix for eight consecutive months this go around, which is likely the longest that I have ever kept it without getting bored and cancelling it. I am finding enough content to retain my interest and the quality has been very good overall. It is not as solid as disc quality, but it is easily good enough so as not to distract me from enjoying what I am watching. I'm readily getting my $15.99 worth of entertainment each month, so I will keep Netflix until that changes. Last edited by Vilya; 08-13-2019 at 12:03 AM. |

In other news, Quibi continue signing up some major creative forces for their short form, mobile only streaming service. Apparently, the need to shoot for both landscape and vertical will take a day of extra post production. This is being compensated by the fact that the providers of the content will own the rights after a two year window and can restructure the content for tv, cable, streaming services etc. Quite how you can shoot for both formats without sacrificing something remains to be seen imo.

![]() Verizon tried a very similar idea with their Go90 service and it failed less than 3 years after it launched despite their having spent $1 billion on it. Whether or not Quibi succeeds does not matter in the slightest. It would just be one more viewing option among many and there is nothing to suggest, besides your previous rant on the subject, that it would harm any existing option. https://digiday.com/media/go90-never-shot/ Last edited by Vilya; 08-13-2019 at 04:08 PM. |

Wendell presents facts, see post #14562 here.
As to your ripped Blu-ray vs streaming, means nothing without details. How were the BD ripped? Software? Transcoder settings? What container were they stored in? What served the file(s) for playback? Software and hardware? Transcoder settings? What were the files served to (playback device)? I can rip a Blu-ray and have it look worse than VHS if so desired. |

I heard on the news today that Vodafone Ireland will be the first operator in my country to officially release 5G in 5 Irish cities. They will release their first 5G compatible smartphone for sale in their stores from tomorrow (Wednesday the 14th of August). Vodafone Ireland will release another 5G smartphone at the end of the month. So some of those lucky people will be having 5G offered to them from tomorrow from Vodafone. I won't be one of those people sadly as I am with Eir Mobile. I won't be getting 5G offered to me from Eir Mobile probably until early next year until more & more devices coming on sale.
I have heard some opinions either from TV & online in how it will transform large parts of the internet & other industries over the past while or so. If anyone here could share their opinions on using 5G on streaming services; I will be happy to hear them. Does 5G serve a regular purpose for people who subscribe to streaming services like Vudu, Hulu, Netflix or Amazon Prime Video? |
