They may not be dull line readings like the Toho International dubs, but they’re still not the film’s original language. Voice actors doing mock Asian voices and the translations are often quite different to fit the lip movements. I get what you are saying and it’s great that you like them but it’s perfectly understandable why many of us don’t like dubs.

I get it - you love the dubs. There's only about 50 pages of you and Jedidork posting the same things about them over and over. That doesn't mean they are great. Because they aren't. If you like them, that's fine. But don't pretend they are something they aren't.

This right here.
Not every Godzilla movie has to be a fun campy romp. And not every Godzilla movie has to be seriously terrifying. It's what keeps it exciting after 65 years.

You repeating that the Titra dubs aren’t great doesn’t make it so. If you’re conceptually opposed to dubs, that’s fine, but the Titra dubs are generally considered to be some of the best ever done, so don’t pretend they’re not something that they are, you’re just trolling bruh, and not very effectively.

I got a chance to see one of the Pippi Longstocking movies in its original language with subtitles and it was horrible and boring. It was like a totally different movie. There is a quicksilver charm to 60s and 70s dubs. I think they are part of the fun. The only thing that is usually better in the original soundtrack is the music. In fun 60s-70s Saturday matinee fare, I'll take a dub over subs any time.

And the quality of the Godzilla dubs I remember is excellent. It was clear that the voice actors were having fun and jumping in with the spirit of the movies. Pretty skilled voice actors too. I can't remember the name of the film, it wasn't a Godzilla, but I remember spotting the comedian Brother Theodore in the credits doing dubbing once. They used stand up comics and radio actors who knew how to deliver a good performance with their voice.

Well if you think Godzilla films are bad than that explains it. Thanks for clarifying.

It's back up at Target but they raised the price from what it was originally. It's now $164.99.

I also have fond memories of the Titra dubs. But I'm fine they aren't included in the set. I prefer the subs. I have the dubs in VHS so I can always pop them in if I want a little nostalgia

I know, that’s why they’re called dubs. And they come in handy if you’re not in the mood to read a movie. And no, I’m not an anti-subtitles Philistine; I’ve seen hundreds of subtitled films. I just love a good old nostalgic well-done dub, which Titra’s are. Peter Fernandez is the man.

I’m glad these films are available in their uncut original form with subtitles. I’d just be even more glad if Toho wasn’t trying to erase film history like a bunch of punk-ass bastards.

Are you talking about Toho hiding the film Half Human?

It doesn't matter if that was the point or not when it's boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring. It comes off as unneccessary fluff just to up the run time. No Godzilla movie should ever be more than 100 minutes long, and even that has proven to be disastrous. They should stick to the 90 minute run time like the Showa and Kiryu movies did.

I guess it could be about that too, but I thought it was supposed to be Africans being brought to America against their will and enslaved.

I grew up on the dubs too, but guess what? I can't stand watching them. It always looks like the audio is out of synch with the video as the dialog does not synch up with the lip flaps.

The only exception I make is 2000 and that is because Sony's cut is superior. However, if I was able to watch that cut with the Japanese voices, I would.

Bad dubbing is when different languages have different words and so the lip movements are different

No. See The Lost World (1925). That is the film where all of these giant monster movies come from.

Trixie's voice coming out of a nazi dominatrix's mouth freaks me out.

That reminds me a bit of watching Police Story dubbed on Criterion's disc and recognizing voice actors, as well as the general style, from Toho's Godzilla dubs. Looking over a few lists I have pulled up, there's:
  • "Kevin," voiced by John Culkin, who voiced Maki in The Return of Godzilla and Terasawa in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
  • May, voiced by Elizabeth Oram, who voiced Naoko in The Return of Godzilla
  • Raymond and "John Ko," both voiced by Warwick Evans, who voiced Okamura in The Return of Godzilla and Professor Fukazawa in Godzilla vs. Mothra
  • Uncle Bill, voiced by Matthew Oram, who voiced Shimizu in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Dr. Mafune in Terror of Mechagodzilla, and Hayashida in The Return of Godzilla
  • Inspector Man, voiced by the insanely prolific Barry Haigh -- just sticking to the Godzilla series, he voiced Yukio in Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Ichinose in Terror of Mechagodzilla, and the Prime Minister in The Return of Godzilla
  • Counsellor Cheung and "Snake Eyes," both voiced by Simon Broad, who voiced Mr. Okochi in Godzilla vs. Biollante, Ando in Godzilla vs. Mothra, and a helicopter pilot in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (possibly only the "lost" original version of the dub)
