Default Rank the Godzilla films ;)

In the spirit of all the “Rank the ____” posts on the forum lately, I figured I’d add one for Gojira. Sure, there are SO many films that it’s a little daunting if not ludicrous, but I figured it could be a bit of fun. If you haven’t seen them all, just rank the ones you’ve seen. That should make things flow a little easier for the more casual fans. Also, taste in kaiju films seems to be even more subjective than other genres, so let’s please keep the snobbery to a minimum. I myself am just ranking my enjoyment, not necessarily what I feel the film’s “objective” quality is.

  1. Godzilla 2000: Millennium
  2. Godzilla, Mothra And King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
  3. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
  4. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
  5. Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.
  6. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters (2019)
  7. Godzilla (1954)/Godzilla, King Of The Monsters!
  8. The Return Of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985
  9. Shin Godzilla
  10. Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992)/Godzilla And Mothra: The Battle For Earth
  11. Godzilla vs. Biollante
  12. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
  13. Mothra vs. Godzilla/Godzilla vs. The Thing
  14. Ebirah, Horror Of The Deep/Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster
  15. King Kong vs. Godzilla
  16. Godzilla (2014)
  17. Godzilla vs. Hedorah/Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster
  18. Godzilla vs. Megalon
  19. Godzilla vs. Gigan
  20. Godzilla (1998)
  21. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
  22. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
  23. Godzilla Raids Again
  24. Destroy All Monsters
  25. Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster
  26. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla
  27. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)
  28. Terror of Mechagodzilla
  29. Godzilla: Final Wars
  30. Invasion of Astro-Monster/Monster Zero
  31. All Monsters Attack
  32. Son Of Godzilla
  33. Godzilla: Planet Of The Monsters

Disclaimers:
  • I reserve the right to change this ranking as I revisit the films, whenever that may be.
  • I have a certain nostalgic affection for GINO ‘98. Shoot me.
  • I was so underwhelmed by the first of the anime trilogy I have yet to even bother with the other two, but otherwise I’ve seen all of the Godzilla films.

That poll is tough!

'85 was the first Godzilla film I ever saw and it will always be my utmost favorite single film. Biollante is probably my favorite direct sequel and no era has ever had a finale that surpassed Destroyah...Showa didn't really even have the option for a finale though.

All that being said though; there is more variety in Showa and the effects in the Millenium era are "technically" superior. Do 3 Heisei films beat the host of Showa titles? For me: yes but I'd probably recommend Showa to a new fan first. Nostalgia pushes Heisei past the finish line for me but that wouldn't be a factor for new fans. Millenium is a distant 3rd.

This is ranked in terms of my favorites, not what I consider to be the "best" films.
This list is always shifting. Every time I revisit these films, something changes.
I'm not biased towards any rendition of Godzilla. Even the mutant iguana version. My ranking is based on how well they made it work, not by how accurate it is to previous incarnations.

Always found that movie to have a good balance of a dark/serious tone and the campy fun tone that I enjoy in these movies. I'd love to see a modern film try to capture the same feel.
Though the monsters speaking could have been left out.

I never thought of ranking Godzilla movies and it's too much work to start now I do prefer the Showa era for sure.

Out of the Showa era, basically the Ishirō Honda films and then the two Mechagodzilla films. I'd have to give some more thought to ranking the Honda films themselves. The original and vs Mothra would be pretty high. I dunno. I'll probably be revisiting them all come the Criterion set and will think about it more than.

Of the ones I'm pretty fresh with:

1. The Return of Godzilla 5/5 (the definitive Godzilla film IMHO)
2. Godzilla vs Destoroyah 5/5
3. Godzilla vs Biollante 4/5
4. Godzilla 1954 4/5
5. Godzilla vs Hedorah 4/5
6. Godzilla (2014) 3/5
7. Godzilla (1998) 1/5

I need a refresher for the rest which I'll be doing with a lot of them with the new Criterion set. Been a long time.

Jesus. Some of you lot have Shin Godzilla ranked pretty low. I thought that thing was probably the 2nd best of the G films.

Favorite era is Heisei. Biollante alone was worth it just cuz it was doing something different. While it's not a perfect series of films, it was great to have characters come back. Miki Sakuza was neat. Battra was cool as an opposite to Mothra. But Mothra also kicked some ass in her film too. Loved the new powers they gave her. Ghidorah was cool. Origin was stupid but he was cool when he was full Kaiju. The classic Kaiju got cool updates. I don't hate Space Godzilla as a character, think he looks pretty cool. HATE Little Godzilla in there though. The film had its weak points. Overall. It's a mish mash of awesome Kaiju action w/ some iffy plots in there. But... at least it was more consistent.

Godzilla Junior was cool too.
