I really wonder if I have more bad ones since I found all those defective Warner discs, but it's not worth losing sleep over.

Agreed! I have been steadily replacing all my DVD's where right now my Blu-ray collection outnumbers my DVD's

Default Dvd rot

I have been collecting Dvds since 1999 and have over 2,000 Dvds and I have never experienced Dvd rot. It must be about as rare as winning the lottery, but sucky. The plus side is Dvds are super cheap now. In 1999 they were $30-$40 a pop.

Guess I should play the lotto more often then since I've had at least 4 DVDs succumb to DVD rot. It's rare but not that rare

Yeah I think the HD-Dvd's were pretty bad. At least the warner ones, I had a few that stopped working I think.

not sure if my issue was rot or decay

but i noticed a lot of people have problmes with warner bros items.

i've had 3 of them from warner bros and one from something alliance

charmed the collector set of the book and either psi factor or earth final conflict had problems not with really rot or decay just bad packaging that resulted in many dvd's that was scratched and unplayable.

when recnetly doing some d2d i ran into two dvd's that would not read in any pc, laptop or standalone dvd player, both happen to be warner bros titles.

one was one of my first dvd's i bought, blast from the past, was not listed as warner bros but the company was either bought by warner bros or warner bros produced it for them. the dvd itself looks flawless.

the other was superman returns which was bought maybe 4 to 6 years ago, its a warner bros titel and it looks like it was just opened from the package.

good thing though about warner bros is they don't have problems with disc replacement.

on the charmed they replaced them never even asked for the originals back.

for these last two i just got a prepaid label in the mail to send them back for replacement.

I have a few dvd's with "decay" or "rot" or whatever you want to call it. I went through some of my collection and The Perfect Storm doesnt play at all and it looks brand new. Neither does my Superman 2 or 3 from my 4 film favorites collection. Well, they play but hang up in the same spots everytime. Also look brand new. Of course, a lot of my old Warner Hd-DVD have problems. Hopefully, this doesnt happen with blu-ray. So far, so good.

I have had problems with the original fat box fold out sets of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel and The X-Files discs. I get a "no information on disc" error when trying to play them. Tried several different brands of DVD players, BD players and computer drives.

The defective discs that I have come across so far are from Universal (2), Anchor Bay (1), and DreamWorks (1).

I'm having a collector's worst nightmare right now, for some reason Warner Bros. related DVDs I bought in the year 2009 have been dying on me.

Yes, Minister (Whole Set)
Yes, Prime Minister (Whole Set)
The Notorious Bettie Page
The Wild Bunch: 2 Disc Special Edition (Disc 2)
The Sopranos: Season 1 (Disc 4)

Tried them on four different players (LG BD630, X-Box 360 Arcade, PS2 Slim and Sony DVP-SR200P) and they refused to load on each one. When the Yes Minister discs died I thought it might have been the humidity as I live in Florida and that's been hell this year but all these were bought within a short period of each other from different stores and nothing from any other company has refused to work so far (and they are all in perfect condition with no apparent rotting). I know people are having issues with some Warner discs but any of them bought within that year giving anyone issues?

Yeah, Warner DVDs from a certain period, as well as their HDDVDs have a pretty bad rep as far as disc rot is concerned. I've never experienced a DVD (or a CD/HDDVD/Blu ray for that matter) simply stop working after working fine. Then again, I only have a few early Warner DVDs and no Warner HDDVDs.

Question

RGS80074:

I can't remember where I bought my BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS/THEM! from.
Will WB still replace it?

I was looking at Amazon customer reviews and it looks like dvd rot is fairly common on the BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS with no problems with THEM!

Lots of my Simpsons DVDs no longer play, or play for a bit then break up / glitch out.

I was trying to watch S7D2 and it wouldn't play a certain ep. Tried playing it on my laptop with the same results. I'm pissed because I wouldn't mind if it was a movie DVD, but a TV show disc is a different beast.

If you're saying it happened to a good amount of your Simpsons discs, I fear the day I go back and try them out.

Only other discs I had problems with were 3 in my Sopranos boxset. All in all I couldn't watch 4 eps. Had to stream them. :-/

With dvd it seems kind of random when it happens, whereas with LD and hd dvd you could at least get somewhat of an idea with a little research on which studios or pressing plants tended to be more faulty.

Recently tried watching Tomorrow Never Dies on dvd & this problem occurred, have it on blu-ray now though.
What the heck... I just put in my copy of Tomorrow Never Dies and it doesn't work either. Goldeneye, Dr. No, and From Russia With Love all did.

My DVD set is this one.
The special features disc doesn't work either.

6 years late to reply, but....

I don't think HD-DVD was guaranteed to rot as such. It seems more like it is related to the plant where the problematic DVDs come from. A suspiciously high number of known bad HD-DVD discs are Warner titles, after all, even if you take into account that Warner were one of the few studios who supported the format.

The hybrid layers on the same disc for dvd and hd dvd were pretty much a poorly executed disaster. I was glad to get rid of that collection. Unfortunately, I'm funding a lot more LD discs with rot than I was anticipating.

It's not Warners fault, it's the fault of Cinram's former Scranton plant. Any disc that's made in Mexico... well... y'know... any disc NOT MADE IN SCRANTON is void from these defects.
