people, please stop mentioning that all 3 cuts have a 4K remaster. this is more annoying then people who constantly asking of all 3 cuts have a 4K remaster.

He's probably realized what an idiot he was when he changed the guns to walkie talkies

Thank goodness those walkie talkies didn't taint my UHD copy. I wouldn't even want it on a second disc. Nothing of value lost. I mean, what is the point of remaking the alien as a CG creature when it looks LESS realistic? The opening Universal fanfare is obscene in the Special Edition. I also find it funny that they added a lens flare when the kids are flying, like an optical flaw is supposed to be a positive.

I had a quick Google but I'm at work and couldn't find anything about him making changes to a couple of those you mention. I had no idea he'd made alterations to Jaws and Saving Private Ryan. Do you know what was changed / a link to somewhere I can read about it?

If not, I'll have a longer Google (oo-er) this evening. Ta.

And you can skip that.

To me, the Final Cut is the perfect one to watch because it keeps a lot of small things that add context without dragging it out, loses the long playboy-in-the-rain scene, and includes a more compact plantation scene that you can skip with the press of a button if you don't feel like watching it every time around.

One could argue that you could also use the same chapter-skip technique with Redux, but the Final Cut is the easiest and mostly more perfect cut to start with. To me.

One movie I wish had a "Final Cut" more than any other, including Apocalypse Now, is The Shining. I really like some of the parts in the extended version, but the parts that I dislike I hate with a passion to a point where I just prefer the shorter cut.

The worst parts of the longer cut of Apocalypse Now are merely draggy, but the worst parts of the longer cut of The Shining are monumentally dumb.

I far prefer the longer cut of The Shining but I'm curious, for the upcoming 4K, will the UK release be the only one that has both cuts?

Jaws had the wire erased that's tugging the buoy near the start, also had things visible on the horizon (when they're out to sea in the Orca) erased.

In SPR they digitally fixed this goof with the chest appliance on Gio Ribisi:

From the Alternate Versions section on IMDB:

Differences between theatrical version vs. DVD

- on the beach in Normandy Tom Hanks orders his men to take out the sniper that has them pinned down. Soldier after soldier die as they go around the corner while they have covering fire. There is a scene that was cut where he is telling a soldier (after soldier baulks) that they will both go out together. Tom counts down and fakes going out and the other soldier goes out and is gunned down.
- Scene where they let the two German soldiers walk away - DVD version does not show them shot in the back as they are down the road.

While I don't care about the added bits & stuff I do care about the digitally recomposited VFX that weren't replaced. You can't tell me the filmmakers intended the kids to be transparent in some of the flying shots, or for the objects (like umbrella or play-doh) E.T. levitates to lose their color saturation.

And lens flares are a stylistic choice a lot of the time. Spielberg had them all over the place in Close Encounters - deliberately since the VFX were shot flat on 65MM.

I dunno if you've seen the E.T. UHD Pete but the much darker, denser look to it really helps those scenes, the opticals look 10x better than any other edition of the theatrical cut I've seen (providing that Spielbergo didn't sneakily recomp it while claiming to be an advocate of never touching his movies ever again).

I agree with this completely. They have a right to do what they want to with their movies, they have a right to do that, but they have no right to judge me for wanting them to keep every version in print for the people that love each edition.

Blade Runner is the only other one I can think of, except maybe the Renegade Cut of Highlander II. I've actually never seen that version, but I'm convinced there's no possible way it cut be worse than what was originally released.
The directors cut of Blade Runner was the Workprint
