Did a search and didn't find anything on this, and I didn't see it mentioned in the HK Snafu thread.

Anyway, it's maybe my favorite New Wave HK martial arts pic, and I took a chance and ordered the recent Mei Ah BD from DDDHouse.

The last version I had was a non-anamorphic DVD, so anything will be a huge improvement.

Any comments on the quality of this release?

What? We were waiting on you to purchase it so we could get a thorough review with screenshots!

I knew of its release but I was hoping someone would get it. Got too many titles coming up in the next month or so to do a blind buy.

Well, I'm not much of a videophile; I come from the old days when fuzzy, full-screen dubs were the norm, and where just a clear, anamorphic picture, original language and original aspect ratio was nirvana. So my standards aren't too high. But I'll give my review after I get it.

I got this in the mail, and watched it last night.

As I said, I'm not much of a videophile, so I can't really give too detailed a review on the technical merits of the BD. It is 5.1 sound, which I know some don't care for. It sounded fine to me. I thought the picture quality looked great on my projector, as well.

I don't think too many share my opinion, but I put this movie above Iron Monkey, any of the OUATIC movies, Tai Chi Master, etc. Beautiful, colorful cinematography with a lot of great atmospheric, outdoor scenes, absolutely top-notch 90's-style fight scenes, well-written characters and a touching story, Anita Mui and Maggie Cheung have never looked more beautiful, and a great score.

To me, this is the pinnacle of 90's New Wave HK martial arts movies.

Sounds like you were happy with it. Good news then. Too bad about the 5.1 but that is to be expected these days, sadly. I may pick this up but being honest, I had seen so many of these films back in the day that I really don't have such a great recollection of it. Maybe now would be the time to pick it up since the titles that I really want are getting pushed back towards the end of the year.

What's your opinion on this release? Any anomalies regarding missing filters or non-corrected day-for-night shots or anything of that nature? The pics you posted look pretty good but probably a bit brighter and digitally for a film from that era should look.

I went ahead and purchased the blu-ray. Noticed it was also available on dvd. Almost tempted to get the dvd as that was a little less than half price. But, no idea how these movies look on dvd. Guess I am better off purchasing the blu-ray.

What are the subtitles like? Relatively free of errors or the typical HK Engrish?

My copy arrived in the mail today. PQ is really good; though transfer is perhaps a bit brighter than what I would expect from a 90`s HK release. Seems to be a recent trend with HK HD masters in general for older releases. Guessing it`s true HD as it`s from Mei Ah; it even says so on the back cover (Full HD). Nice slip. Extras include movie info and a photo gallery. Stats list this release as Anamorphic widescreen 16x9 (1.78:1 I think it says. damn fine print is almost too small for me to read). 87 minutes. Dolby True HD with either Mandarin or Cantonese 5.1ch 96khz. Comes with English, traditional Chinese, etc. Subs are decent enough with only a hint here and there of a misspelling or incorrect English word used.

Never seen this but the thread has me interested; hopefully I can pick it up soon.

Never ordered from DDDHouse before; how are they for shipping/delivery times? I'm in the UK.

Default So underrated!

I’m with you, Ky-Fi. Also one of my favourite Hong Kong flicks… I rarely see it mentioned, so was very happy to see this thread. I watched it back in the 90s on a DVD, and just bought the same Blu-ray. I’m very excited to see it, fullscreen.

Easily one of the best endings of any Hong Kong action flick. An orca in a starring roll… What more could you ask for???

Originally I saw this at a Chinese theater in Los Angeles. I have the DVD but don't think the film is entertaining enough to upgrade. I have 2 Hong Kong posters for the film including this one with the orca and Andy Lau.
