Edit: Did you read that I test them with test patterns and on stock settings the hdr optimizer clips highlights? Only way to get it back is to adjust the tone curve. I don't know how I can be any clearer. Last edited by panasonicst60; 08-22-2019 at 11:35 PM. |

You're very welcome. As soon as I saw the output of the player was 4K60 SDR 709 then I thought that the 24p might be turned off because this in turn outputs everything at 60p, and when dealing with 60p HDR content if the 4:4:4 option is set to 4:2:0 (or it reads from the display chain's EDID that it can't do full-fat 4K60) then it will force an SDR 709 conversion with 8-bit 4:2:0 output on all 60p HDR...hence the 4K60 SDR 709 8-bit 4:2:0 output as shown in your photo of the info screen. Elementary, my dear Watsons!

Take a look at my previous screenshots. My A9F is clipping tons of detail in that horse scene even with the Optimizer engaged because Sony prioritizes APL over highlight detail. Since so much of that scene's detail resides in the upper range, the entire thing washes out once Sony's tone mapping kicks in. I still see benefits to the Optimizer in mid-tones (clouds, steam, etc.), but it can't perform miracles if the display is determined to bend the top of the curve (although the tone curve settings in the UB9000 help mitigate this). |

Sorry to bring up an old topic re: the 820, but I jumped around through several prior pages and couldn't find the info I need/want (and the search feature is....not always great).
For those who do/have used the 820 as a music player (outside of CD): What do you recommend or find to be the best method of playing audio files? Is it fairly easy plug-n-play on the USB end? Or are their file naming conventions I should be particular about? File types? Drive sizes it won't recognize? Etc. etc. Basically, what should I definitely do to get the best music experience out of this player? Thanks. |

As a projector user I'm looking at getting an 820 or 9000. Can those do that same thing? |

I am using the UB820 connected to a Marantz SR8012 with hdmi Video/Audio for the base layer 7.2.4, as well as connected to an Onkyo TX-NR3010 with hdmi Audio for wides, front heights, and bass shakers. The Marantz is then connected to the projector.
If I don't turn the Onkyo on, the Panasonic sends audio via bitstream to the Marantz and I get Dolby Atmos. If I turn the Onkyo on, the Panasonic stops sending bitstream and starts decoding internally, sending multi channel 5.1 surround sound to the Marantz. This doesn't make any sense to me because decoding internally should be more taxing, and sending audio via two hdmi outs should be more taxing, so it would seem a lot easier if it kept everything bitstream. I would like everything bitstream. Anybody run into this and figure out a way to maintain bitstream? Is there some setting I might have wrong? |

It is sending audio over both hdmi, that isn’t the issue. The issue is that when it does, it doesn’t want to bitstream it anymore, it switches to decoding internally. I could try an hdmi splitter, but I would worry about impacting the 4k signal.

The Onkyo 3010 is an older unit, the Panny wouldn’t be able to lock on as 4k 60hz with it (even though it would be used for audio only), and that may affect what it does with the Marantz, which I need to be 4k 60hz.
Just seems strange the Panny WANTS to decode and not bitstream. |

No, the Onkyo is being fed strictly by the audio out hdmi.

Correct. The Onkyo gets audio just fine and doesn’t appear to be getting multi-channel in.

I tested this on a UB820 with 96Khz/24-bit 5.1 FLAC, and it worked fine with 820's DLNA player. My receiver correctly received 96Khz/24-bit 5.1 PCM audio over HDMI.

The following is a interesting review to read from Sound and Vision magazine regarding the flagship Panasonic DP-UB9000.

My UB820 plays Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk in 60p no issues.
