Remember this was made on a 35 million dollar budget. Don't go expecting Blade Runner 2049.

In what respect?
It has less nude holographic billboards?

It looks like The King of Comedy was Joker's inspiration. It even has DeNiro as an aging talk show host in the same vein as the former movie.

Precisely

I mean it's going to look good I think on a film level. As a demo worthy blockbuster experience that makes subwoofers quake. No.

The budget was 55 million. I don’t think budget is really an indicator of whether something will have a great sound mix though.

55? That must be including marketing on top of production. A great soundmix for what it is. Which is not an action oriented blockbuster.

When was the last time a flat 1.85 movie was released in a 4K DCP? I thought that was only capable for films in scope 2.35?

Saving Private Ryan (1.78:1) was my last experience. The Shining (1.85:1) got a 4K DCP as well at Cannes Festival. Next upcoming movie: The Goldfinch (1.85:1) is getting a 4K DCP as well.

I’m really looking forward to this. Big fan of Phillips, I always thought he would be a capable dramatic director.

I think it's potentially going to devide people. It might be on to on the arty side for some folks taste.

It just won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Sounds pretty good to me.

Nope, that’s just production. A great sound mix will be a great sound mix though. I don’t understand why the persistent need to add caveats like “for what it is”. If you mean bombastic, sure, but I’d imagine it’ll still kick where it counts.

With the last 2 winners (The Shape of Water + Roma) being multiple Oscar winners, I beg to differ.

I'm addressing what generally people's perception of comic book film's are, and how those expectations might not match that with Joker. Saying "for what it is" isn't me answering in the negative to the quality of any sound mix.

It's just a fact most people don't engage with film's that are more concerned with art than entertainment. But sometimes you get a film like Joker that brings in more mainstream audiences.

That’s fair, I should have made it more clear that the bit about “for what it is” was more of a general statement about the trend of negging something before saying something positive about it (I.e, this movie is way better than it has any right to be, etc.)

Yeah it’s nice to get one of these movies that possibly bridges that gap every once in a while. Hopefully mainstream audiences can enjoy it and we get more of these one offs.

I've stated in another post this is probably the first full on character driven comic book film. The Dark Knight trilogy was the middle ground. I hope it's successful so we have more variety in the CBM genre. Aye, I do think it's genre.

Yep, I'm genuinely looking forward to this film. I've always loved Joaquin Phoenix and the moment he signed on this movie felt like it could be something better than we all thought. I am glad it's getting such high praise and, while frustrating, I'm also glad it's seeing a fair bit of controversy. Meesa loves some cinematic controversy.

Throw in some Zazie Beetz, De Niro, and even Marc Maron, and i am titillated. No joke.
