Default ‘Quiet Place’ Writers Turned Down Star Wars, Tells Lucasfilm To Start New Franchises

‘Quiet Place’ Writers Turned Down ‘Star Wars’ by Telling Lucasfilm to Start New Franchises

Well, with The Rise of Skywalker set to come out this December, it appears that Lucasfilm has tried courting the screenwriting duo behind "The Quiet Place" for either Star Wars or Indiana Jones. After their success on the movie, they were called by Lucasfilm for a meeting with the screenwriters for an upcoming project.

Turns out, that while at the meeting, they turned Lucasfilm down, calling on Lucasfilm to start new franchises. The full story can be found here:

https://www.indiewire.com/2019/09/qu...es-1202172520/

Here's what the article had to say:

Quote:
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods became one of Hollywood’s most in-demand screenwriting duos after the smash hit that was “A Quiet Place,” the 2018 John Krasinski-directed horror film that earned $340 million worldwide. The success of “A Quiet Place” landed Back and Woods a meeting at Lucasfilm, where executives were courting the duo for potential “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars” movies. In an interview with Movieweb, the writers reveal they turned down Lucasfilm in favor of developing original story ideas. Beck and Woods even called out Lucasfilm’s resistance to new franchises to Lucasfilm’s face.

“We went into Lucasfilm in the wake of ‘A Quiet Place’ and they wanted to talk to us about ‘Indiana Jones’ and ‘Star Wars,’” said Woods. “And we’re like, ‘We wanna talk to you about what is “Star Wars” before it was “Star Wars?” You guys have a responsibility to start a new franchise. That’s where our hearts have always been, just trying to create original ideas.’”

Beck added, “Without giving away too much it was simply ruminating on if we did an ‘Indiana Jones’ movie, what would we want to see in ‘Indiana Jones?’ Or if we did a ‘Star Wars’ movie, what’s that chapter of the whole universe that we would want to see? So it very much was an open canvas talk. It started going down the line a little bit but, again, as Bryan said, it’s just not our DNA. We would rather create what the next ‘Indiana Jones’ could be.”

Not all heroes wear capes. Good on them for publicly speaking up right to the studio’s faces.

Star Wars is a universe now. Not just a franchise. In fact it could, some day, become a genre in itself, like the western and the gangster. And not just a series of epic adventures which the saga is, and even the "Story" films to a great extent .

The Mandalorian is a step in that direction. But that seems to be fine for TV only at the moment.

The guys from AQP are right in the sense that there is a lot of external commentary which inevitably heralds any SW film now before it's even made of the "We don't need..." variety. It's a shame because it limits the exploitation of the GFFA. Brand new franchises would avoid all that but, why do they have to be "franchises" in the first place?

I'm all about some Star Wars and am very much invested in its past, present, and future. That being said, it would be nice for some new original ideas to break through the mainstream and resonate on the level of Star Wars or Indiana Jones to shake things up.

Star Wars is 3 for 10 when it comes to great films, none of which came out while I was alive. Good on them, they made the right call.

That is where the money is, they are not only selling the movie, but mountains of merchandise.

I don't mind Star Wars or Indiana Jones, both are great IMO.

BUT, I would love it if Lucasfilm went back to Howard the Duck and Willow.

There's a lot of hypocrisy there.

The writer's turned down Star Wars/Indiana Jones in favor of creating "new" franchises.

Also, they're dumb AF. If you're going to tell Lucasfilm that they need to create fresh ideas and have different franchises besides Star Wars and Indiana Jones, then why not YOU create those new franchises for Lucasfilm

Dumb.

Yet, here they are doing a SEQUEL to AQP rather than taking their own advice to create more original stories.

Also if this happened around the time of the first movie, why release it now? Just to get those clicks.

Because A Quiet Place, a derivative, pandering mediocrity at best, was chock full of 'new ideas.'

Enjoy the ride while it lasts until the sequel.

Perhaps, Lucasfilm won't take any new franchises. I'm guessing that they want to continue to milk those cows until they are bone dry.

Well, I'll take A Quiet Place over those new Star Wars flicks any day of the week.

Maybe I misunderstood the article but it seems to me that they were actually trying to do that and Lucasfilm/Disney was only interested on what their take for an Indiana Jones and Star Wars movie would be.

I got that impression too. They're not wrong. Lucasfilm could be more than just Star Wars and Indiana Jones. But alas, it's under Disney's control and we all know how they fear originality...
