If that's how they feel about Star Wars, I wonder why the AQP writers took the meeting in the first place?

Maybe to try and spurn some change in this rehash and recycle industry?

They could've conveyed that when declining the invitation.

You know, if I just wrote a big hit horror movie and got approached by someone like Lucasfilm or Disney to do a big franchise movie, I wouldn't brazenly tell them to come up with original ideas.

I mean, I commend them for it, but that's like saying "Blacklist my career, Hollywood"

I've only seen TFA, but based on that I'm right there with you. As I've said before, it's not as if I hated it or anything. I just thought it was mediocre, and I didn't really care about the characters for the most part.

I’ll say this: if any of you claim to want originality and still pay to see Freddie Quell as a clown next month, don’t ever talk about originality.

"Hi, we just took this meeting to let you know how cool and sophisticated we are. We ain't got no time for sequels and franchises and stuff like that. That kind of thing is for mouthbreathers and Walmart shoppers."

"That's great but what we need -"

"Sorry, did you say something? We can't hear you over the sound of our awesomeness and sophistication! Bow before our originality, cretins!" ( *slurps artisanal kale smoothie* )

"Could you please just go now? I actually have work to do."

Most people are lucky to come up with one IP for the ages-- J.K. Rowling, Gene Roddenberry, J.R.R. Tolkein. Here, Lucas came up with two. By my count, these AQP writers have come up with exactly zero. I guess that makes them the perfect candidates to challenge Lucasfilm to create new franchises.

I think that's a bit unfair, to be honest. They weren't really saying they created any new franchises. But, they do make a fair point. Lucasfilm has always been that kind of studio that was always creating new films. Star Wars, Lucasfilm, Willow, American Grafitti, Labyrinth. Lucasfilm, before Disney acquired the studio, had been making different types of movies. Now, with the movie to Disney, Lucasfilm seems to have lost touch with the very fans who love the Star Wars franchise.

Personally, I think Kathleen Kennedy has been too busy trying to lecture and attack fans of the franchise and trying to set an agenda rather than telling the types of stories that Lucasfilm is known for.

Lucasfilm did produce some good content, like Star Wars Rebels and Rogue One and I'm kind of baffled that their other films, like Solo, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi have either lost money or divided the fans with the CEO and their directors just openly attacking fans.

What's funny is that this isn't the first time someone has turned down an offer from Lucasfilm (under Disney's ownership) and it's more of an issue with Lucasfilm's public image than anything else. Directors, producers, writers have been turning them down and it's starting to spread. The studio simply needs to show some good will and I think The Mandalorian is a great place to start. Unless, it turns out to be more of the same that we got from Solo and The Last Jedi.

Why is TFA in that category? Solo lost money; TLJ divided fans. TFA did neither.

For a little context, Hustlers opened this weekend with $33 million, and it's only the third highest opening for an original property so far in 2019 (after Us and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood).

Also wanted to point out that these guys have a horror movie released on VOD this weekend called Haunt. If you're a fan of slasher movies, it's definitely worth a look.

You aint kidding. Its unfortunately simple: People keep flocking to theaters to see the same movies over and over. Like superhero films, derivative horror films and of course everyones favs - reboots, remakes and redos.

Until the movie-going public demands new and/or more from studios and keeps buying tickets.... you arent getting much new stuff. Its too risky for a studio to take a chance when they can just do yet another stupid superhero origin story or cheesey horror film which will make eleventy billion trillion.

Beautifully stated. Its like ex-NFL head coaches turning down coaching jobs with certain teams due to the owners of those teams being known to be trouble and/or are seen as problematic for the franchise in general. Disney/Kennedy have that reputation at this stage. So, some feel its better to stay away.
