Don't get me wrong, I like The Shining but it bores me in the middle of the second act. The third act however is great horror.
God...agree to disagree about the replay value.

Very few films in general that have more replay value for me than The Shining.

Call me ignorant if you want, but I think the current transfer is pretty good. I certainly didn’t fell like I was watching a bad transfer.

I also came to the conclusion that The Shining may very well be the best horror film ever made.

The Exorcist is probably my favorite horror film, but I think The Shining is the better picture in many respects. It’s certainly better than Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hellraiser and Suspiria, which are all glorified B-pictures.

Is it better than Psycho?

...that’s the question.
It was a good transfer for 2007 but it’s still lacking in everything a modern scan would have. It’s not as detailed as it should be and is a bit filtered. The bitrate is low, too.

Also, have to disagree with the remarks on Halloween and TCM in particular. Adore The Shining but The Exorcist and Psycho are definitely superior, IMO. I also prefer Halloween and probably TCM to it.

I wouldn't put the shining above Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hellraiser or Suspiria but I love em all dearly and have watched each countless times. A few being some of the greatest films I've ever seen (suspiria and ttcm).

It's top 10 horror for me, but not quite #1. Probably like #6 or #7. Suspiria and TCM are definitely superior IMO. I wouldn't put Halloween, Elm Street, The Exorcist, or Psycho in the conversation at all.

I love The Shining, I think its a fantastic film, but I never did find it particulary scary.
Although its a better put together film in general terms (and often a technical wonder) it would rate well below a lot of the other supposed B-pictures* listed in the posts above, if I was putting together a list based purely on horror creditionals.

*and if were going down that road aren't all horror flicks B-pictures?

So I've never seen The Shining and I pre ordered the 4K Steelbook yesterday. I'm waiting to see it until I have the 4K because I want my first time to be an experience. Should I watch that cut of the film first or should I wait to watch it so I can see if I can find the international cut on an old DVD or Blu Ray somewhere?

The term B movie has negative connotations but it really shouldn't in relation to horror, the good ones hardly ever have large budgets.

As far as The Shining is concerned...no.

Relatively big budget with an A-list actor in the lead..loaded with surrealistic imagery, immaculate photography and innovative camera work.

It has the look and feel of an art film, as much as it does a horror film imo.

...all of which makes it incredibly unique.

Jaws, Alien and The Shining are my holy trinity. And if someone challenges Jaws being a horror film, I sub in Psycho.

depending on who you ask on here
that question/debate can send people crazier than Jack lol

just watch the one you've ordered then get International cut if you like film
(most who like it will have both versions)

and then let us all know which you prefer and why ? lol

I used to consider Jaws to be a horror film, but now I'm not sure.

The Shining, The Exorcist and all of the others are better than that turd Suspiria.

I can see not liking suspiria's dialogue or plot, but tell me the shot of Jessica Harper in the back seat of the cab or her smoking with the blue haze aren't some of the greatest shots in the genre's history.

difficult putting in order/list esp if you include Jaws/Alien etc
but all are top 9/10 or 10/10 imo

Exorcist, TCM, The Shining would prob be my top 3 Horror's
but all are 10/10 favourites so see them level joint top
