Yeah, I also didn't care much for The Funhouse on my first couple viewings. It wasn't until my third viewing where I started to appreciate it and it's just grown ever since. I can see how some might find it a bit too slow though. It does have some pacing issues in places.

I first saw The Funhouse back in the '90s when Joe Bob Briggs hosted it on MonsterVision. After so many years I could only remember thinking it was weird and not really my thing, but I was still kind of new to horror at the time. I finally saw it again about two years ago on TCM and thought it was terrific, immediately bought the Blu-ray and have watched it several more times since. Maybe a tad slow in the first act (I'm still not entirely sure what the "subplot" about the little brother wandering around is all about) but otherwise a solid little '80s horror movie that oozes atmosphere.

seems like most people share the same feeling about THE FUNHOUSE.
I first saw it on HBO after it's initial release in the early 80's and liked it but thought it took forever to "get going". I've seen it many times since throughout the years and eventually it grew to an upper tier 80's horror flick. The mood and atmosphere of this film is really good and the ending is actually very intense! |

I'll throw in my support for THE FUNHOUSE, which is elevated considerably by the macabre touches of director Tobe Hooper. It feels a bit like a slasher flick by way of a monster movie, but the teens here are better characterized than many films from this early 80s period in the genre and of course, Hooper being Hooper, it's the various eccentric and oddball carnival folk played by Kevin Conway, Sylvia Miles and William Finley among others who really steal the show and interest Hooper.
The production design and widescreen cinematography are nicely and professionally done, and there's some cool use of the Dolby Stereo once inside the funhouse. Something that's always bothered me about this one is the make-up on the "monster" - it looks overdone and not a little silly. This felt like a case where less could definitely have been more, and would've resulted in a creepier and more effective creature. |

Yeah, I was bored at work and clicked the link to the sale as soon as I saw the email come in. So far about half my order has shipped and the rest is either pending or a preorder (Paid regular price for the preorders, but I wanted to lock in copies).
